Kerry Low Low Mature Cheddar
Advantages: Low in fat, but has all the taste of a mature cheddar!
Firstly I would like to point out that my Kerry LowLow cheese comes in the grated form and not in a solid block of cheese as shown in the Dooyoo picture.
Always on the lookout for any type of low fat foods, be it yoghurts, cheese spreads, jams, ect... I was pleased when I spotted this in my local Morrisons on special offer at only £1.00 for a 200g bag. When opening the bag if you are careful you will then be able to reseal it again after you have used some.It can be a bit fiddly and not always seal up straight away, but it usually does in the end!.
Now I'm only interested in strong mature cheese, so I was a bit worried incase this was like some of the other ones I have purchased in the past, that call themselves mature, but just taste so bland and rubbery, but at only a £1.00 a bag there really isn't much to lose.
Coming in a cream and green plastic bag with a small clear window on the front so you can see the grated cheese inside, it was time to try!.
I always try to buy grated if I can, as I find that I have a lot less than if I was slicing it up myself (some for my sandwich some for me to try while making it!). It has a nice yellow colour to it and smells delicious. The cheese is grated in reasonable shreds not to thick (like some I've had from Tesco's in the past, almost bordering on chunks!).Now to taste, (the best part of this review!) this is a really nice cheese and is definitely mature, with a rich creamy taste. You will not need to much of this to put on a jacket potato, as the taste is quite strong.
So at last it seems that someone has finally come up with a decent cheddar that is low in fat. A 30g serving contains;
This cheese is obviously made from pasteurised cows milk and contains no artificial colours or preservatives. Also gluten free. Once opened this bag of grated cheese is best eaten within 3 days of opening. So I will be buying this again as it is great for putting on Jacket Spud, as well as a sprinkle on top of a Shephards Pie or on some nice crackers. Grated cheese is so versatile and being low fat you don't feel guilty when having a small amount.
Worth buying if trying to cut back on calories, but still fancy a nice treat from time to time!
Summary: With a 3rd less fat than normal cheddar well worth having in the fridge!
