Lactofree Soft White Cheese
Advantages: Lactose free, delicious, just like Philadelphia cream cheese
Disadvantages: Not easily found in the supermarkets.
Lactofree Soft White Cheese is pretty much normal soft white cheese but without the lactose that irritates us lactose intolerant people.
Preferring rice milk, I've not yet been tempted by Lactofree milk, but was recently tempted by their semi hard cheese (which I have already reviewed ). It was so nice to be able to eat cheese again without the after effects. So when I heard that Lactofree (Arla) were doing a soft white cheese I wanted to try it. The only problem was that none of the local shops and supermarkets were selling it.
The Lactofree website has a Stockist search so you can find who stocks what Lactofree products near where you live. Unfortunately, my nearest stockist of Lactofree Soft White Cheese is Sainsbury's in Shrewsbury - roughly a 33 mile drive away.
So on a shopping trip to Shrewsbury I decided to search Sainsbury's for this soft white cheese. As soon as I found it, I picked up a couple of tubs of it, after all it's a long journey just to have to go back for some more. What with the Lactofree Semi Hard Cheese tasting pretty much like normal cheddar cheese, I was confident that Lactofree Soft White Cheese was going to be just as nice.
Was I right?
Yes, I was! I opened the tub (a plastic tub with a foil seal and a plastic lid on top) and was greeted by a soft white cheese that looked a lot like Philadelphia's soft white cheese.
Dipping in a knife and spreading the cheese on top of a Rivita, the texture was soft and smooth. I like to spread it on quite thickly (otherwise a Rivita is a bit like crunchy cardboard!). Biting into it was heavenly, a bit like those Philadelphia adverts! Except this wasn't Philadelphia, it's a lactose-free version by Arla (under the Lactofree brand). I must admit that it's been a long time since I've actually tasted Philadelphia, but from memory I don't think I'd have been able to tell the difference between it and this Lactofree Soft White Cheese had I not opened the tub myself.
Lactofree Soft White Cheese is delicious and you can use it just like you'd use a cheese spread like Philadelphia... on bread, crackers, Rivitas, whatever you like. It's just a shame that I have to make a special trip to Sainsbury's to buy it!
Lactose intolerance people no longer have to miss out on soft white cheese.
RRP £1.34 and found in Sainsbury's.
Summary: Lactose-intolerant people can now eat soft cheese!
