“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Cheese „
We tried the Tesco Grated Red Leicester Cheese about a month back now, as they have a long running offer on it that makes it a very cheap cheese choice. You can purchase two bags of this cheese, or one of these and one of the others from this range, for £3 most of the time. They set the offer every few weeks it seems. The full retail price for a 250g bag is only £1.53 now, though previously it has been a bit higher. Obviously the 2 for £3 offer isn't as great as it previously was!
This cheese is pretty bargain basement red leicester really. It's got an incredibly mild flavour, and it's not got much of an aroma either. It's a perfectly pleasant cheese though, and I like that it's got a kind of nutty, almost savoury flavour to it. It goes really well in sandwiches with a bit of red onion, and the Mrs made a really tasty quiche with this mixed with some standard cheddar.
The nutritional contents is pretty average for cheese, and 100g contains 405 calories along with 33.5g of fat and 1.5g of salt. On the plus side, 100g also contains 24.4g of protein.
The bag this comes in is probably the worst resealable bag I've ever had. The bag is supposed to reseal with a slide gripper bit near the top of the bag after opening, but the gripper doesn't seem to have any grip. Either it winds up with a smidgen of cheese in it which clogs it up and causes it to stay open, or it shuts all the way and then just springs open again.
This is an acceptable product for the price, but it's not a patch on some of the brand name cheeses you can get. I don't think much to the packaging either. I think it's worth 3 stars and one to buy if you're on a budget, but if you can afford something like the Cathedral City cheese instead, then definitely get that.
