“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Cheeses „
I love bread and I love cheese, but unfortunately my waistline doesn't! Looking for a way that I could still get my cheese fix, but keep the calories low, I came across Tesco light choices soft cheese with onions and chives. If I'm honest, I tend to think 'low fat, low taste' so went for this one as I thought the onion and chives would provide some extra flavour if the cheese itself was very bland.
The cheese comes in a rectangular tub, with a clear plastic lid, and a peel off foil layer, a lot like Philadelphia cheese (although I haven't had that for ages, and I'm sure I read a review on here saying the packaging has now changed?). The lid is a little bit flimsy, and it worries me that the cheese will not stay fresh, I think I'd prefer something a bit sturdier, or at least something that felt like it was fitting onto the tub tightly.
The cheese is a sort of off white colour and is speckled with lots of generously sized pieces of chive. It's a thick consistency but spreads easily and smoothly and doesn't seem to have too much of a strong smell to it, despite the onion and chive.
The taste of this cheese is absolutely gorgeous and I really needn't have worried about it being flavourless! The cheese has a gorgeous smooth and creamy texture, and a strong but not overpowering cheesy taste but also a slight chalkiness to the aftertaste, although I find that with all soft cheese - even the premium brands like Philadelphia. I must admit the taste of the onion was very mild - a little too mild for me as I prefer a stronger taste, but the amount and the flavour of the chives was just perfect and gave the cheese that little extra something to make it stand out from your everyday soft cheese.
Obviously there are countless ways to eat this, but I've simply been having it on a pitta bread with salad or spread over a Ryvita.

A 250g tub of this cheese costs just 79p from Tesco.
Overall, I am very pleased with this and will continue to buy it. For something so low fat and low calorie it really doesn't lack flavour and I'd certainly recommend giving it a try.
I have a passion for eating bagels for breakfast and sometimes I even have one for lunch especially if I'm in London where there are plenty of quality bagel shops. I tend to also stock up for home and by the time you have slapped some cream cheese on and maybe some smoked salmon they are not the healthiest of snacks so after reading a review about this light cream cheese from Tesco I thought I would give it a go.
A 250g tub costs 79p which is pretty good value as you get fair few bagels covered with the one tub. There is a feint aroma of onions when you open the tub but you do have to taqke a big sniff, certainly it is not over powering or very strong. It is smooth and easy to spread especially on a toasted bagel and melts a little bit and almost like it is sweating.
It has a nice cream cheese taste, slightly bitter as a good cream cheese should be and not at all harsh. Again there is a hint of onion flavour especially as a bit of an after taste as well. There are also chives in the spread however these are barely discernable in taste terms.
This does make a nice change however personally I would have liked it to have been a bit stronger as it is not that different in taste to normal cream cheese but it is good value and has slightly lower calories as well.
