Earlier this year, I had stopped at a junction and the car behind decided not to, unfortunately, this resulted in my car being written off. Following the advice from the insurance company, I needed to replace my child car seat so as soon as all the necessary calls had been made, I started to browse the internet for a suitable alternative as the car seat I had, was no longer available.
I came across the Britax Billy on Amazon which normally retails for £60 but was reduced to £29.99 with free delivery. The reviews I read seemed to be mixed, but as the reviews didn't express concerns over safety, it was a brand I felt confident using and also that the car it would be used it was only used to take and fetch Lauren from the childminder, I was happy to purchase. The seat arrived within 2 days which I thought was excellent service; it was packaged up really well so as not to incur any damage during transit.
The frame of the car seat is grey, with a black cover. The cover is completely removable so it can be washed, although Lauren doesn't spend much time in this car seat, she does seem to get all sorts of food and drinks spilt down it! The seat is slightly cushioned for extra comfort.
What I like most about the seat is the headrest/head support, this is curved around on both sides and cushioned which I imagine would be really comfortable should Lauren fall asleep in the car, she also commented on this several times. We haven't actually experienced her falling asleep in the car as I don't travel far enough. I do know that the main reason for the curved headrest though is to provide additional protection should the seat be involved in a side impact collision.
The back of the seat actually adjusts to 11 different heights meaning as your little one grows, the seat can be extended to make higher (your child's head should be below the top of the headrest). I didn't actually know this until I got the user manual out this evening to write the review - I am quite glad I did now as Lauren is quite tall for her age and it wouldn't be long before we needed to do this. Although I have not tried to adjust the seat myself, my other half has popped outside while I am writing this and said it is really ready to do, you just pull something around the back of the seat.
The seat also has two cup holders to the base of the seat, these are hidden in the base, and you can pull out when needed and push back in when not in use.
As with most car seats, it also has side impact protection.
The car seat is classed as a group 2/3 car seat. It is suitable for children weighing between 15 - 35kg (which is approximately 4 to 12 years old). Having said that, it should be the weight which indicated whether you move up to this car seat rather than the age of the child as every child is different.
Installing the car seat is really easy, just below the headrest is a seatbelt guider which you thread the seatbelt through; this is like a small coil so you can be safe that your little ones couldn't remove the seat belt themselves. I find this really handy as I only have a 2 door car to which Lauren sits in the front, if ever I give someone a lift (and Lauren isn't with me), I can just quickly remove and place in the boot or on the backseat of the car. I would add that I don't have any front passenger airbags in my car; it is not recommended car seats are used in the front if you have airbags.
The guiders are positioned in quite a good place; the seatbelt doesn't rub on Laurens neck or look like it is too high or too low.
The car seat is also available from baby specialists like Babies R Us, Mothercare etc, baby specialist will normally fit the car seat too to ensure it fits correctly but if you buy online like me, you can check the manufacturers website and they will advise if suitable for your make and model of car.
The price seems to vary quite a lot, the RRP is £60 but the cheapest I have seen is Amazon where I purchased for £29
Overall, I have been using the car seat for around 6 months now and not experienced any problems or concerns, Lauren says she actually prefers this to her other one as it was more comfortable, the price is fab and therefore I would give 5 out of 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
