I got this Cybex Aton car seat as part of a package travel system in Mama and Papas. I got the stroller, carry cot, car seat and chassis for £430. This car seat is currently selling on the Mama and Papas website for £145, so I think I got quite a good deal.
This Cybex Aton car seat is quite a cute looking baby car seat. It is suitable from birth up to 13kg, however when my baby was born, at only 5 pounds 3 ounces, his head was not really supported enough in this car seat, it was way to big for him bringing him home from the hospital, I had to roll up a flannel to put either side of his head to stop his head being knocked about or falling forward. This wasn't too much of a problem, he soon grew into it.
This car seat comes in a range of colours, which are really nice, not too bright or bold, but I just went with the black one for my little boy. This car seat is not lightweight! It isn't too bad to carry about on its own, but when you have a baby in it, especially mine who is now 15 pounds, I can hardly lift it, and he is only 4 months old! I have to leave my car seat now in the car and just buckle my baby in it in the car, I used to be able to bring him inside in the car seat and leave him in it a while if he was asleep, but it is way too heavy now to be carrying about.
I can just about lift this car seat onto the pram chassis, and you can buy adapters to fit it onto your pram, instead of having to get your baby out of the car seat when they are sleeping and into the stroller, which is a fantastic idea and I regularly do this with my baby. The adapters are bought separately for about £25, but are well worth it, and they just slot onto the chassis, then the car seat just slots on to them, it is so simple and easy to do.
The handle on this car seat is plastic and is black. There are buttons on either side which you hold down to move the handle, it moves completely out the way to get your baby in with ease, and you can attach lots of dangling toys to it, to keep your baby entertained in the car.
The straps are easy to buckle up once you have worked it out, but there is just a simple big red button to press to release these straps and I can see a baby a bit older being able to press this button easily which worries me a bit. The straps can be tightened and made looser really easily my pulling them tighter, or pressing a button to simply make them looser. There are removable pads on the straps so they don't rub on your babies skin, I'm glad you can remove these as they are near his neck, and he is constantly sick all over them! They pull off so easily though and you can just put them in the washing machine, and even tumble dry them. There is a padded insert in the car seat for smaller babies to support them, my son is just growing out of that now, so will be removing that soon, although not small enough to transport premature or very small newborn babies.
All of the car seat parts the baby sits in can be removed and washed which is great. It comes out looking good as new. This car seat can go in the front of your car, if you turn your passenger air bag off, and also fits in the back. The car seat belts fits around the back of the car seat, and around the front and it feels really safe and secure once buckled in. Once you get the hang of this its really easy, but I did struggle the first few times. There is also an isofix base which you can buy for this car seat to fit it into your car without having to buckle your seat belt round it, but it is about £100, and it is so easy to just fasten the car seat belt round the car seat, so I haven't bothered buying this.
I would definitely recommend this car seat, I have had no problems whatsoever with it, it is still perfect, like new, strong and sturdy, although it is a bit too heavy for me to carry about now with my baby in it, it does the job its suppose to, and I love being able to slot it onto my pram without having to wake my baby up to go shopping!
We purchased the cybex aton car seat in blackjack from argos for £90. The main reason we chose it was because it matched our travel system although the maxi cosi would also have fit I preferred the design of this one.
The cybex aton is a group 0+ car seat so it is a rear facing infant carrier and only suitable for babies up to 13kg. My daughter is now 14 months and only 10kg but personally I found my daughter had outgrown this car seat by 9 months and was looking very squashed in it so we moved her to a bigger one. I can't really imagine a 13kg fitting comfortably in here. The car seat itself weighs just 3.5kg so it is one of the lightest on the market which is a massive plus point when lugging it around as with the weight of bubs aswell it does get very heavy.
As mentioned previously I love the look of this car seat and that's what swung the purchasing decision for me. There is a retractable hood built in which is a great feature. Its very padded and looks really comfortable. When Amelia came home from hospital she weighed just over 4lb and although she looked slightly lost she did look very comfortable. She fell asleep quite regualarly in here even while being carried around and moved from car to car. There is a newborn insert included with the carseat for a snugger fit. It also has padded chest straps to make sure that baby stays comfortable. The straps are plain grey with a red buckle. Ours has black chest strap padding to match the rest of the carseat but they are available in a wide range of colours. All the material covering come off easily and can be machine washed. Great if you end up with a sicky baby like my Amelia!
The cybex aton is very easy to fit using a normal seat belt. It is colour coded to make it even easier. Once fitted it is very secure with no wobbling at all. You can also buy a belted base or an iso fix base to make it even easier. We had the belted base and can highly recommend it.
We had a sola pram and the car seat fitted on it via adaptors that have to be purchased separately costing £22. They were well worth the money though as I found it invaluable to take her out of the car and just attach the wheels if she was sleeping. For shorter journeys to the supermarket this was very convienient as we also had more room in the boot for shopping by just having the pram frame in the rather than the carrycot aswell. It was very easy to attach the seat to the fram, you just put the adaptors on and the seat slots in with ease. The car seat can also be used as a rocking chair for baby due to the shape of it which is very handy if your taking them to visit relatives for example.
All in all I was very happy with this car seat. My daughter was comfortable and safe and it also looked different to other peoples seats which I like. 5 stars from me. Highly recommended.
- Why We Bought -
When I was pregnant last year I did A LOT of research into what buggy to buy. I knew I wanted to be able to attach a car seat onto the buggy so when we settled on the Mamas & Papas Urbo buggy that meant buying a Mamas & Papas car seat so that it would be compatible. We chose the Cybex Aton car seat as it was the cheaper of two options.
- The Car Seat -
The Cybex Aton is a Group 0+ car seat. This means it is suitable from birth and accommodates a weight of 0-13kg (0-29lb). This would make the child approximately 15 months when they would need to move onto the next stage car seat. With my son we used the car seat from birth and he is still using it now at 12 months. He is quite petite for his age so I think we may have a couple months more use left in it.
The frame of the seat is made from black plastic while the handle and a few other details are made from silver plastic. Our seat cover is Dove Grey which is a grey/brown colour. It also comes in Orchid (pink), Denim, Black Jack, Plum Pudding, Lime Jelly (yellow), Red, and Green. I think the colour range is quite good although I would have loved a navy one. The material is really soft and quite padded to make it comfortable for baby. There is also added comfort from the strap pads and for when the baby is very little there is a neck and head support. There is a hood made from black material and silver plastic which can be folded back when it's not needed. The length of the straps can be easily adjusted and the height of them also has three positions so it grows with your baby. There is a blue plastic slot on either side of the seat and one on the back to thread the seat belt through. Overall the car seat looks attractive, comfortable, stylish and robust.
- Using the Car Seat in the Car -
It was a little confusing using the car seat for the first time when we left hospital with our newborn baby. But in a matter of minutes I had worked out how to safely strap my baby into the seat and then strap the seat into the car. When you know how it really is very easy. The car seat straps slot together fairly easily but not so easy that my son has worked out how to do it so I am confident he won't be escaping the seat while I am driving. I have heard stories about car seats not being compatible with certain cars but we have used this car seat in my old Citroen C2, my new Vauxhall Astra, my husband's Alfa Romeo Mito, my friend's Ford KA and my mother's Audi A3 with no problems at all. It was a tight fit with the seat belt in the Alfa Romeo but it did fit. It is very easy to adjust the length of the straps with a simple press of a button and it isn't too challenging to adjust the height of the straps between the three different positions. It is easy to take the car seat in and out of the car by carrying it by the handle, although you do need two hands to press the buttons to pull up or put down the handle. The car seat isn't very light but this seems normal compared to other car seats (maybe I'm just weak!). It is designed to be rear facing in the car as this is safest and ideally it should be in the back of the car rather than the passenger seat. Overall I feel confident that the car seat is keeping my baby safe and he obviously find it comfortable as he usually nods off quite happily on car journeys!
- Using the Car Seat as a Travel System -
The Cybex Aton car seat can be attached to our Urbo buggy frame to create something called a travel system. This is one of the best inventions ever! It means that if your baby falls asleep in the car you don't need to take him out of the car seat to put him into the buggy, you simple attach the adapters onto the buggy frame and then slot the car seat on top. This is very easy to do and I have found this very useful. Of course when baby falls asleep in the travel system he is already in the car seat for going back into the car. This particular car seat is compatible with quite a range of Mamas & Papas buggies.I thoroughly recommend getting a buggy and car seat that can be used as a travel system.
- Isofix Base -
This car seat is compatible with an isofix base although we don't have one so I can't really comment on this. The compatible version costs around £100.
- Durability and Cleaning -
Our car seat has survived the last year and still looks as good as new. The head and neck support, strap pads and car seat cover can all be taken off and machine washed which I have done a few times and they have come out fine. The material is also quite good for wiping clean.
- Price and Availability -
The Cybex Aton is available from Mamas & Papas stores or their website. I have also seen it available in some independent children's stores, although it may not have the same offers that Mamas & Papas have. We paid £140, but we got a £50 discount for buying it with the buggy. It is currently priced at £126, 10% off the usual price. This is a lot of money but we found it to be quite competitively priced compared to other similar car seats. I think it is worth the money.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend this car seat as I can't really fault it. It is attractive, easy to use, safe and comfortable for my baby and is reasonably priced.
