When our daughter was 3 she outgrew her previous car seat and we looked around for a replacement. She tends to fall asleep on long journeys so a booster seat was never really an option as it did not support her head. A decent child car seat was proving to be expensive but we eventually bought this reclining car seat second hand for £15.
There were a few things that immediately appealed (other than the price). Firstly the car seat is quite large and had plenty of room for her to grow. The recommended maximum age is 5 and I would say this is about right. Also it looked comfortable and gave her somewhere to lean her head against when sleeping. The part to recline the seat is at the base of the seat and can easily be accessed and adjusted by the driver even while the car is moving - it takes a little more effort to put the seat back into a seated position so I would recommend stopping before you try this. There are several different positions for the recliner but the differences are quite subtle - we just go from max seated to max lying down. Lastly, (and most importantly for us since she is often car sick) it is very easy to pull the covers off and put them in the wash.
Installing the car seat was easy enough to do in theory but proved to be a bit fiddly. You have to sort of thread the seatbelt through a couple of clips in the back and then click it into the usual seatbelt holder. The seat is then held firmly in place. However unless you read the instructions carefully it is not going to be obvious where the belt has to go and even then it is a bit of a struggle. Also if you arrive somewhere at night and want to take the car seat out I recommend you first find a torch or you are going to have a very frustrating time!
Once the seat is in you then have a 5 point harness to secure the child. This is very good and gives her a good range of movement while holding her securely in place. The shoulder straps are well padded and have never been a cause of any discomfort. These clip into the central section that lies between her legs. I guess it is par for the course with these types of seats but I find that while it works great when she is wearing trousers it's a pain in the bum when she is wearing a skirt. The skirt material is always getting in the way of the clip, stopping it from closing...I tend to let her mother put her in the car on days when she is dressed like that :-)
There are not many other downsides to talk of. The only problem I have ever had with it is that it is quite wide and on many cars it can be difficult to access the holder that you attach the seat belt into. This also means that if you have a full car with 2 adults on the back seat as well then things are going to get very cramped. The seat also lacks some of the other gadgets that we have had on earlier car seats - in particular there is no drinks holder and nowhere to attach a tray that she can put her food/colouring books on. Seeing as she tended to spill all the drinks we gave her and dropped crumbs all over the car I don't see this as too much of a disadvantage and I would heartily recommend the chair.
