Advantages: Safe comfortable children.
Disadvantages: Can be difficult to fit.
Please, please do not take it upon yourself to improvise with your childrens car seats. Years of designing and testing goes into car seats yet we still see seats being improperly used. Always make sure your seat is fitted according to the instructions, get someone from the shop to demonstrate. If they can't or won't shop elsewhere. Make sure the seat fits your car, so you are not tempted to use it improperly. Many rearward facing baby seats do not fit in rear seats as the seat belts do not stretch round. I have seen baby seats the wrong way round in rear seats and wonder how they are secured. Our baby seat didn't fit in the rear seat of our car thus it stayed in the front. Do not attempt to use ropes, straps and other DIY methods to fit seats. If it doesn't fit as intended get another model. When you buy make sure the shop is happy to change if you are not happy. Always use your childs weight as a guide not age as childrens sizes vary so much. I wouldn't buy second hand as there are not usually instructions and you never know the history of the seat. Designs are also being improved every year so newer is better. From day 1 always put them in their seat and buckle them in for EVERY journey. If that is what everyone does there is less chance of the child getting the idea that they can object. My son knows the car doesn't move if his seatbelt isn't on. (He screamed his head off once when I forgot to do it up). If you persivere and are consistant it becomes automatic. It can be time consuming at first but saves having fights everytime in the future and saves their lives. 'He didn't like having his belt on' is a sorry excuse when they are scrapeing your child off the windscreen and road. Sorry I know that is blunt. You don't have to spend a lot. I got a light weight polystyrne baby car seat similar to:- * Argos's Meggy 'Saturn' Infant S
eat £19.99 0-22lbs. It was light to carry and nice and snug. Once she out grew this I got a larger reclining seat similar to :- * Mothercares 2 stage reclining seat £54.99 20lbs-40lbs. It has a comfortable position for sleeping and lets them sit upright too. You can get seats that fit from birth right up to approx 4 years for £39.99 (Argos Safety Baby Reclining Car Seat - Stage 1 and 2) £40 for 4 years of safe travel isn't to much is it.
