I brought this Matrix car seat as it can also be used on the Jane chasis as a pram unit, puschair or as a lie flat car seat or indeed also as a stage 0+ rear facing car seat. A very versatile unit.
The unit is well padded and has a removable cushion that can be machine washed. There is a 5 point harness for use when used as a car seat or as a puschair that has removable covers over the buckles. these are rather large when used for a very young baby however.
I mainly used this as a pram so the buckles were pushed under the padding and not a problem. There is a hood which on the one I had had a music button which every time you moved the hood played a relaxing music sound... luckily this only lasted about 10 seconds each press as I kept accidentally making it play.
The unit was easy to put on and off the chassis unit however was a little bulky to carry around.
I also used the unit as a carry cot in the house and our daughter soon moved to sleeping in that in the day rather than me having to move her moses basket downstairs each morning!
The unit is easy to move into a raised positon and has several postions for baby to sit up.
We used it twice as a rear facing car seat but found that it tended to sit quite leaning towards the seat of the car and our baby (8 months old at the time) fell asleep and in the leaning postion made her head fall forward almost onto her chest... not very comfy for her and not really ideal. We used it in a VW Passatt (08 reg)
We never used it as a lie flat car seat.
I would recommend as a pram/carry cot/puschair or as a lie flat car seat but check if will sit right in your car if you want to use it as a car seat. it is roomier than the usual carry tot car seats for newborns.
We purchased this car seat as part of the travel system with the slalom pro prior to having our baby. We were attracted to the car seat ecause of the lie flat position which is better for a newborns back. The car seat is very solid and our baby has appeared to be very comfortable in the seat.
The main downsides to the seat are that it is very heavy and cumbersome in the lie flat position. Which at the moment is not too much of a problem but as our child grows it will become more of an issue. Initially the car seat was tricky to get into the car and out of the car in the lie flat position as the clips can be fiddly to attach and detatch. However if this means that the child is secure then it is worth it. The cover needs to be attached to the seat prior to being attached to the pushchair otherwise it flies up and does not fit properly. The poppers can be stiff and can be painful to push together.
As the seat can be used as both a lie flat car seat and as a traditional car seat it is very versatile. We have not yet used it in the rear facing position- but we will when our son gets older.
The car seat clips in well to our Jane Slalom pro as a pram however the next car seat we buy we will look at getting an isofix car seat for ease of use.
