      A popular choice

I bought this car seat after a large amount of research which turned out to be largely redundant as we were constrained by our car at the time. This was a Ford Fiesta which turned out to have short seatbelts in the back which made it difficult to find a seat that could be belted up in the car. The seat was not a Which best buy when fitted with the seatbelt but was one of only a few that could fit that we could choose between.

This is a very popular car seat and I would not be surprised if it was the top seller, judging by the number I see being used. This is largely because it fits onto many different makes of travel system so this could be a consideration if you want to go for a seat that you can wheel around as part of a travel system. I was not interested in this as I don't have a travel system. It is worth bearing in mind that it is not recommended for children to spend more than two hours in a car seat.

The seat can be used with an isofix base or a seatbelt, which is what I used as our car did not have isofix at the time. This is as safe if done correctly but you must be careful to carefully fit the seat each time and obviously it takes longer than just clicking into an isofix base. The seat belt guides are blue to make clear where the belt should go. It is easy to fix when you know what to do although I have found you need to be careful that the belt on the far side goes under the end of the handle as it tends to rest over it which means the belt is not taught enough.

The seat is very suitable for a newborn as it has a wedge shaped cushion and head hugger which means the baby lies flatter and their head is protected. I was surprised how quickly my baby outgrew these features though so they can only be used for a few weeks at most. As they get bigger the straps can be moved to a higher hole so that they still sit on the shoulders. My daughter is still using this seat at 16 months as she is not at the weight for the next size seat yet. The seat is a stage 0/0+ which means it can be used up to 13kg but most children would be too long for it way before they reached that weight as their head would reach over the end of the seat. It would also be heavy to carry a child of that weight in the seat very far! The weight of the seat itself is reasonable and the handle is comfortable which makes it easy enough to carry.

The straps have shoulder protectors and a padded crotch protector. The latter is pretty useless as it only tucks into the seat fabric so it kept falling out and we stopped using it. The straps are easy to do up and tighten by pulling the strap at the front.

The seat seems well designed with good padding and good head wings. My daughter always seems happy to ride in it and will now climb into it herself when it is put on the floor so she must like it! She has lots of fun rocking in it and playing with the straps although the button is firm enough that she can't open them herself.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Good buy

Great first car seat which is compatible with most of the big brand buggies
(albeit some of them you need to buy adaptors). Comfortable for your baby
especially with the newborn insert which further cushions the head. Has a
small sun hood and the carry bar is easy to take up and down for
transportation. The straps come with padding attachements although they
often fall off and easily get lost (replacements are costly) so could do
with some velcro fixings - this would be easy enough to add yourself. I
only really have 2 criticisms. 1) We purchased the black model and the
cover quickly faded with the sunlight coming through the car window so we
needed to buy a replacement cover for the next baby. 2) The car seat is
very heavy - especially with an older baby. I don't know if this is the
case with all car seats - I suspect it is. Apart from this, the seat has
lasted well and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. I would also recommend
buying the isofix base to go with the seat which makes taking the seat in
and out of the car much easier - especially if you are trying not to wake a
      sleeping baby!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A seat I am confident my baby is safe and comfy in

With my little one now 6 months the memory of the stress (and expense!) of choosing baby kit is fading but the consequences of choices made are still very much being lived with! Choosing a car seat was far from straight forward so I hope this review helps you if, like me, you are grappling with the conundrum.

The cabriofix is a rear facing infant seat suitable for babies from birth until approximately one year (about 13kg). This sort of car seat is also known as group 0+. This seat is made by Maxi Cosi and is one of their cheaper seats, the more expensive ones being the pebble and the pearl. RRP is about £120 although Mothercare are currently offering an exclusive fabric design at £96 and I paid just £60 as part of a pram bundle deal with Winstanleys of Wigan. The cabriofix comes in a range of colours and fabric types.

The main features of the seat are as follows:
      * fits to two Maxi cosi isofix bases for quick and easy removal and placement in the car
      * fits to Maxi Cosi belt fitted base
      * can be belted direct to the seat
      * can be fixed, using adaptors purchased seperately, to a broad range of travel system prams
      *side impact protection system
      * removable wedge to improve fit for new borns
      * removable neck support for new borns
      * easy adjust straps
      *collapsible hood

My experience with the seat has been largely positive. I have used it extensively in the house, in the car and on my i-Candy pram. From birth my baby was happy in this seat - too happy in fact. It was the only place he would sleep in the first six weeks - cue worried mum setting an alarm to avoid baby being in the seat for more than the recommended 2 hours. The wedge provided a good fit for him at 8 pounds. The neck support was ok however, I also own the more expensive pebble seat for use in my partner's car and the neck support in that is superior, being more supportive and generally more robust. With the wedge and neck support removed when my baby was big enough, the seat is still cosy and he still likes a kip in there from time to time. The padding is very soft. When I pick him up he is toasty warm which is nice in winter but one to keep an eye on in summer.

In my car I have an iso-fix base so the seat clicks in and out with no problem at all. I have had occasion to attach it using the seat belt system. I was really impressed with how quick and easy this was. To help you out the parts of the seat the belt needs to go under are colour coded blue and it is almost impossible to do this incorrectly. The straps are also very easy to adjust which is important as the clothes your baby is wearing (eg snow suit compared to fleece hoody) can make a huge difference to the fit of the harness from use to use. There is one button to loosen then tighten the straps.

there's a few areas for improvement though no biggies. First the hood - it's great that it's there and can be pulled forward and put back however, it attaches to the handle with fabric loops. they can be fiddly to get in place and can fly off leaving baby with fabric over their face - no danger of suffocation but a bit annoying. The straps have padded covers on them at shoulder and crotch pressure points. It only took a couple of months for these to part company with the strap, one was lost during a trip to mothercare and the others are somewhere around the house or on the floor of the car. Baby doesn't appear too perturbed by this, but again, the Maxi Cosi pebble design is superior in this aspect as the padding is attached. In terms of durability, in the last month or so the fabric has pilled and bobbled significantly where my little one's feet have kicked. This is an anesthetic issue - there is no sign of an actual hole forming. When using with my pram, the seat can be tricky to click in to the adapters. I have got better at doing this but it has taken a long time. Removing the seat from the pram is also tricky as it requires two buttons to be pressed on either side of the seat at the same time whilst simultaneously lifting the seat clear. My son is over one stone now so this hasn't got easier. That said, the more expensive Maxi Cosi pebble is no easier to remove.

I would recommend the Cabriofix, especially if you can get it on offer or as part of a travel system bundle. If you intend to use the seat on a pram then also think about buying the raincover. You can also buy a foot muff although I put my little one in his snowsuit on cold days and he never feels cold with just this. the isofix base will also make your life easier although, as mentioned, the seat belt system is very clever. Don;t forget to buy a set of adapters too if you want to attach this to a compatible pr4am. The seat loses one star for the minor problems mentioned and gets four stars from me.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

slightly expensive but well worth the money

When choosing a car seat there are so many things to consider....colour, price, ease of use, safety, how long it can be used for, does it fit in our car?.....and so it cant always be a case of going into a shop and choosing one which looks nice.

We bought this car seat 5 years ago when I had Arthur, I used it again when I had Aoife. I would never suggest buying a 2nd hand car seat or using one which is given to you unless you know for certain it has been well maintained and has never been involved in an accident.

Maxi cosi, at the time of buying, was one of the most popular cars eats around so I sort of wanted what others had, but it was quite expensive. This car seat RRPs at around £135 but we bought in a sale at Halfords for £85.
We chose the all black version, partly because it was the colour in the sale but it was also unisex. could be

When we bought the car seat we had a car without isofix so this car seat was great as it could be secured using just the car seat belt. It can be purchased alongside an isofix base if you do have isofix in your car. The men at Halfords came out to the car and showed us how to fit it and made sure it fit well in our car before they would even sell it to us. Is advisable to check the car seat you wish to buy before purchase as not all car seats fit in all cars. Most reputable car seat stockists will do this free of charge.

As at turns out this is quite an easy car seat to fasten into the car....The car seat is put on the seat with baby facing backwards. The lap strap goes over the babies lap and tucks under some plastic indents at the edge of the car seat, the chest strap goes around the back of the car seat and tucks into another little indent. That's it....simple. One point to note is the handle of the car seat MUST be kept in the upright (carrying) position, this helps to protect baby if there is a crash.
It is also easy to secure baby into the car seat. You lengthen the straps by pressing a button at the foot end of the car seat and pull the over shoulder straps loose. put baby in the car seat and fasten. You then pull a length of strap at the foot of the car seat (near the button mentioned before) and pull until it is secure onto baby. No faffing with buckles, just a simple press of a button and a pull of a strap. Very easy.

Now for the car seat itself. It weighs 3.5 kg but is very sturdy and solidly built. Its intended for babies weighing 0-13 kg. But you may want to move baby into a bigger car seat if they become too long. My daughter now is 2 years old but only weighs 10kg, she is far too long for the car seat and her head would come over the top and the straps wouldn't be positioned correctly. Babies can move to the next stage car seat from 9kg, but I would suggest keeping in a rear facing car seat such as this as long as its safe and comfortable for baby.

The car seat came with a little wedge to put under a newborn babies back and bottom to raise them into a comfortable position in the seat, it also came which a head hugger which made babies head more secure in the seat. There is also a sun shade built into the top of the seat, this is very useful to keep sun of baby while in the car, or to make it a little darker if baby is asleep.
Although I never attatched this to a pram, it is compatable with many different brands of prams, including Airbuggy, Baby Jogger, Babystyle, Bugaboo, iCandy, Maxi-Cosi, Micralite, Mima, Mothercare, Mountain Buggy, Mutsy, Phil & Teds, Quinny, Silver Cross, Stokke and Uppababy. It is my understanding you need adaptors to connect to the pram so it is worth checking if other prams are compatible and how they connect.

I really did like this car seat, it looked classy and washed well. The covers come off completely and can be machine washed. This is very useful if you have a sicky baby!!! It lasted well and even though it was in use for 2 children it still looked in fantastic condition when I gave it away. (again this isn't recommended, but my friend knew how well we looked after it and that it hadn't been in any accidents....).
I would fully recommend this car seat to anyone thinking of buying a car seat, and I would buy another in future if needed. I do think £135 is expensive so I would recommend keeping an eye out for sales and discounts. I cant remove a star for price because who can put a price on child safety?? so its a full 5 stars from me.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Would definitely recommend

Our first baby was born earlier this year and in an attempt to ease the confusion and amount of money spent, we opted to purchase a package from a baby shop that included a pram/ pushchair and car seat which would attach to the pram chassis with adapters (this said car seat would be the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix and the pram was the iCandy Apple).

The car seat was advertised in the shop with the isofix base. However we did not purchase the base as the price seemed quite high to us and the sales assistant said that it didn't really have any added benefit in terms of safety - it was more a product which would make putting the car seat into the car easier. We use the old fashioned method of securing the car seat with a seatbelt. This is a little tricky at first - there are two side 'arms' to slip the seatbelt through before clicking into the seatbelt holder as you would if you were putting the seatbelt across yourself. Then the seatbelt is placed through an 'arm' at the back of the car seat to hold it in place and you must pull on the seatbelt gently to ensure it is firmly in place. This procedure takes a bit of practice but once you get used to the order in which to put the seatbelt through the various arms on the car seat it is very easy.

Our baby seems to find the car seat comfortable enough - there is a removable newborn headrest which is a very reassuring feature. Our only concern is that our baby is not at the recommended age at which to remove the newborn headrest, but her legs seem to hang over the edge of the car seat. She is quite a long baby and I believe there is a way to adjust the headrest but I have not yet discovered it. The hood of the car seat goes up and down with ease and there is a nice click when it is locked in place (I like this as it reassures me that the hood is up properly). The straps are easily adjustable with a small button at the front of the car seat as well, and the straps click into a holder neatly to hold baby securely but comfortably. There are cushioned covers which go over the straps to make baby more comfortable. These are a really nice feature but have a tendency to slip off the straps. They are easy enough to put back on but you have to keep an eye out for them slipping off otherwise they will be very easy to lose.

The car seat attached to the iCandy pram chassis with two adapters (there are other types of chassis it attaches to as well). The adapters seem quite expensive but as we got a package deal they were a little cheaper. It can be a little confusing to put the adapters onto the pram chassis the right way round - if they are the wrong way round the car seat will be sloped backwards. It is very easy to attach the car seat to the chassis once the adapters are on, however, removing it from the chassis is a little more difficult as there are so many buttons and choosing the right ones to press to release the car seat is a challenge!

I don't personally have anything to compare this car seat to as it is the first one I have purchased and I have no experience of using another brand. However I am completely happy with my purchase - it is practical, sturdy (albeit quite heavy) and even comes in a variety of colours!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Yes it's expensive but it will last you longer that other infant car seats. fantastic with a base

To save a crazy long story I ended up with a Maxi Cosi Cabriofix car seat after I had tried a Graco and silver cross infant car seat previously. I initially started off with a Graco infant car seat as I liked the idea of the base staying in the car and having the ease of lifting baby out in the car seat. Some of my friends that already had kids had filled me in on lack of sleep, runs in cars putting baby to sleep etc etc so I thought this would be a good compromise, bring baby in the house to extend the sleep! I was well aware of the recommended two hour limit for babies to stay in these seats but I also knew if it stretched the length of sleep my unborn son had we would all be a lot happier!!
So the first trip my son took in the Graco made me realise how awful this car seat really was, his head hung forward the whole 30 mile journey home, he looked horribly uncomfortable.
It didn't take me long to decide to get a Silver Cross Ventura car seat to go with my Silver Cross 3d pram. I really loved the car seat, he sat so much better. Again it didn't take me long to fall out of love with this either as it didn't have the handy base for in the car.

I had run out of other choices by this time! I had always admired the maxi cosi car seats but thought they were way over priced! It didn't take me long to realize that you definitely get what you pay for! I love this car seat so much, I kept my son in it as long as I possibly could. I had never known about the secret compartment at the back of the seat before I bought this, it was great for keeping an extra bib and a little toy in for emergencies! Its for adjusting the straps too.

The sun canopy can be folded and stored at the back out of the way too which is great, I usually kept mine out to protect my sons eyes from any glare coming in the car windows. The handle is super easy to move to which is very convenient for putting a bigger (than newborn) baby in. I used to tuck the two straps slightly behind the handle, pop my son in then pull them out, was so much easier than struggling to find them once he was sat in the seat!

I (of course) had the base for in the car, which was just fantastic. I did occasionally use it without the base and it was easy enough to strap in, I did feel someone who did it regularly would have done it much quicker and easier than me though.

There is also the newborn insert that keeps tiny babies heads from moving about too much and has a wedge to prevent them being too upright. This is super easy to take out when you decide your bundle of joy has outgrown it.

My son was in this until about 20 months when we purchased a car seat from the next group up, a Besafe izi combi. At about 27 months old we had his two year check and it turned out he was still in the weight range for this seat so out of curiosity I tried my son back in the seat, I was pleasantly surprised to see he still had a tiny bit of growing room!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Excellent first car seat!

I loved everything about the maxicosi cabriofix car seat. We brought this for our first born and were more than happy to pay that extra amount knowing our baby would be in good, trusted hands with this seat.

My favourite thing about the MaxiCosi Cabriofix car seat was that we could attach it to our Mothercare Spin Travel system with the maxicosi adaptors. This allowed us to move our baby in and out of the car without waking him by taking him out of the car seat.

Everytime my little boy was in the car seat he looked unbelievably comfortable and the head support was a big bonus as it was soft and supported his head well until he was strong enough to do it himself.

The car seat had simple instructions so was easy to install which was a big plus as we'd be putting it in and out of the car on a regular basis.

The only downside i have to this car seat is that my little man was once sick all over it and we couldn't get the cover off. We had to remove the cover but it was still hanging on by the flap thats at the bottom of the seat as we couldn't remove it. So it had to be washed hanging over the bath as we couldn't de-attach it. Not sure if this was just us or whether you can't actually remove it! thats the only reason i've nocked a star off the rating otherwise it would be 5 stars!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          brilliant!

I bought this car seat several years ago before Millie was born and am now using it again with baby Sophie. Because this car seat is such good quality, was never in an accident I saw no reason to buy a new one for when our second baby arrived. It is definitely a very good buy. At the time of buying it we were shocked by the expense but now I realise it has been very good value for money considering we have now used it for two babies and whilst it's in use we constantly use it.

          === Choosing a car seat ===

Newborn babies who travel home via car have their car seats checked by a midwife upon leaving hospital (or at least they do here!) the midwife helps the new mum to the car and checks that baby is secured properly and this is because car safety is extremely important for a new born. Before having Millie I didn't know anything about car seats, didn't know if they faced forward or backwards, if they went in the front or the back, how they were attached, what kind of price they would be... nothing! When I think about it I'm amazed how much I just did not know about before having a baby! When I was about 20 weeks pregnant we went to Toys R Us to look at their car seats and I was surprised that there are several different brands that you can buy. I had hoped I could just go in and pick one off the shelf and away we go but no it's much more complicated than that and I understand why. Choosing a car seat that works for you is really important and it's also vital that you get it fitted properly. We chose this brand in the end because it looked very well padded, it was adaptable to the pushchair that we were going to use and the members of staff said it was one of the safest. When we chose this a member of staff fitted it in our car and showed us how it worked. It doesn't just fit in with a complicated mechanism but fits on a base that you fit first and this just looked so practical I was really pleased. It cost us £110 for the seat and a further £80 for the base. I was absolutely shocked by the price it just seemed like an awful lot of money and there were other brands that we could have bought that were cheaper but for the reasons listed above we thought this was best for us.

I think when choosing a car seat the things you need to look for are whether it will fit in your car, will you be able to fit it each time, are you happy with the safety aspect of it and how long will it fit the baby for. This is a first size seat so it said it would be suitable until the baby is about 20lb so around 9-12 months but there are others that last for longer.

          ===Fitting the seat===

With other car seats you fit the seat to your car so each time you get it out you have to disconnect it and then when you put it in you need to fit it again, to me this seems like a lot of hassle but this seat is different. You can buy this seat as cabriofix or isofix. We had the cabriofix one. This basically is the kind of connection you have in the car, if your car is not fitted with Isofix then you will need Cabriofix and this will fit in any car. You don't fit the seat but you fit a base and the seat clips into the base with ease. The base is a heavy, sturdy, piece which sits on the seat of the car and is fastened in. You use your seatbelt to secure it in place and I found it a little difficult at first but eventually it was really easy to do- it's like with most things, you just have to practice a couple of times and it will be fine. This base then sits on the seat and you put the car seat into this base. When the car seat is in the right place a little green dot appears so you know that it is secure. To lift it out you simply pull a lever at the back of the seat, see the green dot turn to red and then lift the seat upwards. This means you can remove the seat with your baby in it in a matter of seconds with no messing around. It's really such a great way to fit the seat I am so pleased with this how it fits. Now that I'm using it with Baby Sophie I can see how amazing this fitting is as I have even less time so wouldn't have the time to attach it all back whilst Millie waits and chances are the messing around would wake the baby up. This really is a very good selling point of this seat and it also makes the seat very secure and in place.

          ===As baby travels===

This car seat has a 'head hugger' which is an insert that is within the seat which has extra padding and head support. This is for when your baby is tiny, as your baby grows it will fill the space and you can remove the head hugger to give them more space. This is so well padded it was one of the first things I noticed when buying this seat as it just felt so comfortable. The seat has padded sides which protect your baby. The straps are expendable so that you can make them longer when your baby is bigger and it's easy to do just by pulling the straps and you then tighten them once baby is in by pulling the excess strap beneath the seat. It is important to make sure your baby is tightly secured, if there is excess straps then they are not as protected. It is always advised to put the blankets over the straps and not under too so that the straps are tighter. The straps have little padded cushions on them which you can take off if you wish but it makes them much more comfortable especially if your baby falls asleep and leans against them. This car seat faces backwards and this is something which is required by law- your baby must face backwards in a first size seat. Baby Sophie so far is travelling in this really well, she seems very comfortable and snug and has had lots of little sleeps whilst in here. I don't worry that she looked squashed or in an awkward position, it really does look comfortable and I remember being the same with Millie.

Whilst Sophie is in here I can take this seat and connect it to the set of wheels we have so from getting her out of the car I don't even need to wake her by moving her from one item to another like I would if she had a separate pram. Also, if I want to carry this then I can do by using the carrying handle. This can be pushed backwards so it is out of the way if you don't want to use it and it does give a little click when it has gone all the way back and this can wake baby so be warned! When it is sunny I pull out the sun shield which is tucked behind the seat and connects onto the handle. This gives a good amount of protection from the glare of the sun so when I think about it I think that this seat is really well designed with lots of baby practicalities thought through.

          === Cleaning it ===

The only downside with this seat is that it s difficult to clean but I think this is likely to be the case with all car seats. The material on the seat varies depending upon what the seat is you've bought but the one I have is a charcoal grey with little textured parts on it and so it is quite difficult to clean as if crumbs or bits of milk or baby sick gets into these textured parts it's really difficult to get it out. The head hugger removes so you can sponge it down better and can hoover beneath it if you wish and you can wipe it all down but it is really difficult to get it completely washed. I was lucky that Millie wasn't a sickly baby so we didn't have many incidents of trying to clean this seat but it is not the most straight forward to do.

          ===Conclusion===

I haven't ever used a different car seat so I can't compare this to other brands, I have never been tempted to try a different brand because I have always been so happy with this. It is a really very good brand and I am so happy that i bought it.

This car seat was really well designed with lots of things in mind, it isn't just a car seat but a comfortable and practical way to transport your baby safely. It has a sun visor built in that I didn't actually know about until Millie was about 3 months old and I saw other people with this car seat with one and I wondered where they got it from I had no idea it actually came with it! It is such a good idea and it was great to find! The extra padding is vital when your baby is tiny and it's great that this can be removed when they grow. At the moment, even with this padding, Baby Sophie looks really tiny in it but I know that before long she too will be filling this car seat!

Without a doubt the best part of this car seat is how easy it is to fit in your car. It is a fantastic idea that it is the base that you fit and the car seat just slots into it. This saves time and effort. I see some parents struggling with their car seats, trying to connect them back in whilst it's raining on them and their other children are complaining and it's great to know I can just pop it in the base and it's done! It is great how you just take it out and it will then connect onto the wheels we have or you can put it in a supermarket trolley. It is very practical.

Thinking of drawbacks I would say the fact it is difficult to clean is one and also it is really quite heavy. I know car seats have to be heavy to be safe but it is difficult when you are weak from having just given birth to then carry this as it can be heavy and after a few minutes of carrying it it can make you feel tired especially when the baby gets bigger and begins to fill it! The first few times I lifted it out of the base it was a bit awkward so that was something that was frustrating at first, I would find it hard to pull the lever with one hand whilst lifting it up with the other but over time I got used to it and was soon able to do this in a matter of seconds and I still think that it was faster than having to disconnect it all like you would with other brands.

In summary, I think that this is a brilliant car seat. Millie was in this until she was 12 months old as she was only small. I think babies have to be 21lb before they move into the next stage or have their heads over the top of the seat and she was in it for the first year of her life. Baby Sophie is a month old and will probably be in it for around a year too so when I think about it I think the price we paid was a very good one as we will have 2 year's worth of use out of it and it is just so practical and functional it is brilliant.

I highly recommend this car seat if you have a new baby.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

You can be safe in the knowledge that your baby is well protected

I purchased this when I had my youngest daughter as I bought a pram which had a chassis that adapted to hold this car seat if required.

From a safety aspect I always tend to go for maxi cosi as I find it is a brand recognised for its safety and this keeps me happy. This was used from when baby was a day old bringing her home from hospital, it is rear facing and the seat belt goes around the back and across the front, although there are also ISO fix units which you can have fitted in the car but I did not get one of these as I thought they were quite expensive just to save a little time.

The seat itself is very comfortable for baby and has padding which goes onto the straps which is great when baby gets a little bigger and wriggles about. There is also a little pull down storage compartment at the back which, although very small was a bonus for me as I did not expect one, and all storage is good with a little baby and all the baby essentials you have to have.

I believe we paid £115.00 for this but I have since seen them a little cheaper if you price compare on the Internet and you can get them from mothercare.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

for the price, you may aswell buy a cheaper brand unless you HAVE to

When my daughter was first born, we had no idea about baby stuff and what was good in terms of value and practicality and so a lot of products and things like different prams (we had 3 different ones!) were trial and error and one of them was this Maxi-Cosi car seat. We literally had it for 8 months after which point it was rendered obsolete but nevertheless here is my overall review of using this car seat.

          --- Specifications ---

This is a simple car seat from the maxi-cosi brand is suitable for babies from birth up to 13kg or 12 months. It is a sleek black design so unisex for boys/girls and fits nicely in cars as it doesn't stand out too harshly.

The basic plus points for this car seat is it's multi-purpose use. It is a car seat that can be used in the car, and also on prams which are Maxi-Cosi and the popular in the market; Quinny frame.

In terms of in the car it can be put in safely and securely using a seatbelt for the car seat on it's own or it can be put on an isofix base (insert a new extortionate fee for this set of equipment here! I'm serious. It's an additional £105!) When used with EasyBase it is easier as there is no need to attach seat with seat belt, just click this car seat in and go!

It has a convenient carry handle and is very lightweight (3.35kg without a baby in it, a fair bit more when baby is inside!) There is also a "secret" (since for first 2 months I did not even know it was there!) storage compartment at the back, but let's not get carried away you won't be putting nappies or wipes in here, perhaps a packet of tissues and a couple papers is all the capacity is really capable of!

It has an easily removable cover for washing so anytime baby has a little spew it can be cleaned in a nanosecond. As usual with a children's car seat this one has has a 5 point safety harness, with the 5 straps: two are at the shoulders, two at the hips, and one at the crotch that all come to connect to a buckle release mechanism. This car seat has the one pull harness for easy adjusting harness length. This makes it a lot easier to adjust the straps as baby grows with the car seat

          --- Features and Comfort ---

One thing with this car seat is that it looks (I can't judge having never gotten it it! Although I think I did try once) extremely comfortable, snug and padded. Bringing my newborn home in it she looked so happy (all that milk I'm sure) and supported in there I hardly wanted to take her out. It comes as shown in the picture with the removable support pillow with headhugger for smaller babies, belt pads and integrated sun canopy.

The sun canopy is a thin black almost viscose type material that stretches over the handle bars so when that is up, the canopy is up, shielding baby from harsh sunlight and also deflects heat quite well giving baby some shade and leaving baby a lot cooler and protected from the sun.

          --- Purchasing ---

We were fortunate enough to be given this car seat as a gift so we didn't pay for it meaning I cannot quarrel too much, but for the price (which fills me with horror!) it seems a bit pricey for what it does as it is currently in the price range of £100, and marginally upwards.

--- Personal Opinion and Use ---

Right where do I start....there aren't many but I will try think of some good points:

          ADVANTAGES

It is a nice looking car seat, looks expensive (it should do for hundred quid!), very sleek as it is black and is quite good to have it for use in car and also on a travel system for Quinny or Maxi-Cosi and I am sure a few other leading brands like Bug-a-boo and Silver Cross are also compatible with this car seat.

For my newborn it was perfect as she looked comfortable and well placed inside and I did truly love it at first. It is sturdy in that it doesn't feel flimsy and is lightweight so a good strong man will have ease carrying this around with baby inside. However...

          DISADVANTAGES

What seems to make this a leading brand car seat is because it can be used with a wide variety of travel systems (in laymens term a pushchair frame) I think the mass market just assume it is the "car seat to have". However, for what it does I really can't justify it being worth £100.

The fact it is only rearward facing was a big problem for us. My daughter was quite advanced (at least I like to think so!) and by 6 months she was already standing up and holding her own. Sitting in this car seat like a baby, she would just cry consistently as she wanted to be able to sit up and look around out the window out the view and be more active, not sitting squashed in this car seat unable to really do anything. This just made car journeys a nightmare! The specifications also say up to 13kg but this is nonsense. No child that weight would fit in this car seat no way! Most definitely not up to 12 months without legs hanging out drastically and in the rearward facing position this is impossible as the actual seat of the car would cause legs to be bent and most definitely uncomfortable.

One thing I most definitely don't understand is why parent's use this car seat on their prams and then again in their cars...especially for newborns! The position of this car seat leaves baby in quite a hunched position, and as they are quite fragile and their spines aren't fully formed babies are not supposed to sit in this car seat for more than 2 hours at a time (if that!) and are better lying fully flat. Fully informed with this information prior to my daughter's birth I bought a Mamas & Papas pramette in which my daughter was fully able to lie down flat for first few months of her life and would not be uncomfortable, and only used this car seat for when we were doing small journeys to and from new grandparents house in my partners car (I did not drive at the time) so as to do what was best for her growth. I hope any parents reading this don't make practice of extensive use of these types of car seats with their newborns as it really isn't good at all!

Lastly, this car seat was extraordinarily fiddly to secure in the car. It isn't rocket science I have to say but the first time we used it, we didn't know what was going on! It required the car seat belt to stretch across baby's lap, held down under 2 handles either side of the car seat and then into the clasp to secure it down, then the longer strap (which would normally be across an adult's chest when in the seatbelt) to go around the back of the car seat and into a little slot. This secures the car seat from jerking back and forth should the car come to an immediate halt however it does not secure the car seat from rocking side to side so (GOD FORBID!) you were in a terrible car seat and the car flipped on the side, I can assure you the car seat will be going the same way and will not be secured in base. I definitely was not impressed with the ease the car seat still moved even when "securely" strapped down in the car. No doubt with the iSoFix base it would be 100 times more secure but I really didn't see any point shelling out £100 when I had already found a car seat that did the job a million times better and at a far cheaper price.

          ---Would I recommend? ---

Sadly I would not. It is not a car seat with longevity, as we didn't use it past 8 months or so and it is ridiculously overpriced. Parents with a pram which accomodates this car seat may love it, but as I only used it in the car it seems way too much to pay £100 for especially when you can practically get an identical version of a different brand (cough, cough kiddicare!) for a good £60 and more cheaper. It'll last the same time, and do the same job so really for this car seat you are paying for the name and image more than anything else.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Ideal car seat

We we're given this as a present when expecting our first baby and first impressions are that it looked modern, smaller then many other car seats I had seen and what was even better was that it was so much lighter which if you need to carry round is ideal! We had the plain black version although I have seen other colours such as reds and blues which look equally as nice.

The car seat is in the group 0+ and is for newborns up to 13kg.

The handle pushes back when not in use and then just by pressing two buttons on the bottom of either handle it pops back up which is nice and easy and it clicks into place so you know you have pulled it far enough forward.

There is a sunshade which is almost hidden behind the seat with a quick pull it comes out and attached to the handles keeping the sun of your baby. When you don't want to use it, it is easily hidden again, this makes the car seat look that much more sleek and the thin material of the sun shade makes the car seat that much lighter.

The seat itself is nicely padded so your newborn looks lovely and snug when in it. It also has a head cushion/protector for when your baby is a newborn. This can be easily removed when your baby outgrows it. It also has shoulder and crotch pads which is great as it stops any friction on your delicate babies skin making them that much more comfortable.

The straps themselves are easily adjustable with a quick pull making it easy to make sure your baby is protected and comfy!

The car seat can be fitted onto the matching quinny stroller we didn't have this but friends did so it may be worth looking at!

An added bonus is the hidden storage compartment at the back which most other car seats didn't have. But was extremely useful as we used to put our babies dummy's in there.

This is an ideal car seat, its so good we used it for our second baby as well!
