The Maxi Cosi Rodi SPS car seat is a group 2/3 forward facing high back booster car seat.
It is designed for 3.5-12 years or 15-36kg. The seat is simply affixed with the 3 point car seat belt.
SPS stands for Side Protection System and the car seat seems very deep in comparison to other car seats we have used.
The seat has a good level of adjustment and my kids find it comfortable. The side parts can be adjusted in and out and the head rest slides up and down. I think the combination of the depth of the padded seat and the adjustability allows you to make a seat that your child is sitting likely to find comfortable and fits them well.
As car seats go it's not too heavy and pretty easy to take out of a car, the only negative is that it's quite a tall car seat so some people might find it awkward to keep putting it in and out of a car.
The covers come in a few colours, we have the black and grey one and it's aged well. It's also fairly easy to remove the covers and wash them.
It comes with a 12 month guarantee.
Replacement seat covers cost around £35 and they do a summer cover too although we've never found it hot enough in the UK climate to warrant buying a cover just for the summer months. It might be useful for those who travel further south in Europe and find that the cover causes their kids to sweat where the skin touches.
It costs around £60 to £80 approximately.
Car seats are an extremely piece of kit you need for your child and something I take very seriously when choosing. Having two son's over time we have gone through five car seats. Having our children close together has meant we have had an overlap so haven't been able to hand down and then we had the problem with the Maxi Cosi Tobi breaking! I have always been a fan of Maxi Cosi as I feel they are the leading brand in car seat technology. Last year though we opted for a brand change and bought the Britax Evolva 1-2-3 which has been an ok car seat nothing majorly wrong with it. But when my youngest son needed a new car seat recently and he took over his brothers and we bought our eldest a new one we found ourselves returning to the Maxi Cosi brand. We ended up getting the Maxi Cosi Rodi SPS.
My eldest son is five now and at the right weight he can now have a booster with a back and looking on the market there is a lot to choose from. We looked at some cheaper brands but after trying a few out in shops I just felt they lack the comfort I wanted for my son. We do a fair bit of motorway travelling so my son can be in the car for longish periods of time I didn't want it to feel like he was sat on a lump of plastic, yet money is a bit tight so we couldn't afford top of the range like we used too. On our search we came across a few of the Maxi Cosi boosters and when searching online I found a great deal on the Rodi SPS. It isn't top of the range but I feel it is still above many others on the market. We managed to get it at a great price of £60 reduced from £75 and what value for money we got.
The Maxi Cosi Rodi requires a small amount of assembly it comes in two pieces. The back of the seat needs attaching to the booster. This looks fairly simple but looks can deceive you as I found myself sweating slightly! It does need a little bit of force to it, to get it to clip in. Once in place I was amazed by how light the product was yet it felt very sturdy. This was going to be perfect for me as my parents and sister often take my son out so moving it from car to car would be a dream compared to the heavy Britax Evolva we also have.
The Maxi Cosi Rodi is a group 2/3 car seat and it is guide lined at ages 3.5 years to 12 years. As with all car seats they also come with a weight range, for this particular one it is 15kg to 36kg which my eldest son meets. This car seat has a side protection system which will protect your child from any side impact, the height adjustable back rest also adds to the safety too as it can be adjusted to suit your child and grows as they do. Adjusting the back rest is very simple to do on the back of the product it is a sliding mechanism and has six positions for it to lock into. This car seat is installed with the use of the cars three point seatbelt so it would be something to consider as to whether your child is ready to be moved away from a five point harness. The seat comes with red safety belt hooks on the headrest which the seat belt feeds through to make sure the seat belt fits perfectly for your child. It can be fiddly to put the seat belt in the hooks but I would highly recommend you do not only for safety but for comfort for your child too. When I first installed it in my car I was pleasantly surprised to see how slim fitting it is compared to the somewhat bulky Britax. Light and slim fitting gives huge thumbs up from me.
My son instantly loved his new car seat and sat in it proudly saying how old he was now having a cool car seat like this! He finds it very comfortable and with the head rest adjusted to his size he fits in it perfectly. He was a little put out it doesn't have a cup holder but as we have cup holders in the drop down rest in the middle of the back seats I can't see his problem , children hey! We have been on a few motorway journeys since purchasing the Maxi Cosi Rodi and my son was happy enough in his seat not once moaning he was uncomfortable or had a sweaty back like he seemed to always get in the Britax. He has also fallen asleep in the car seat and as the head rest is adjusted to him it has protected his head. This seat doesn't have a recline option on it but to be fair when your child is old enough or big enough to be sitting in this particular car I don't think there is a need for a recline. My son is five and has learnt for his head to fall sideward's when he is asleep in the car rather than forwards! My son is happy all round with this seat and I am too not only is it a safe seat for my son it is also comfortable too. The cover of the seat also comes off and is washable so practical too.
There are accessories for the seat as well although they seemed to be very limited now. You can buy replacement covers for the Rodi but they will set you back around £50. There is also a pocket attachment which can hold drink bottles if your child desirers it. Also available is a summer cover available in a navy colour which is made from breathable fabric so too keep your child cooler in the summer months. This is quite reasonable priced at £25. The Rodi seems to be available in only two colours the Enzo and the Stone. The Enzo is made up of bright red and a deep dark red which is quite nice if you want something different and the Stone is black and dark grey colour which is the one we have.
Overall I love this car seat and am glad I went for a good make. Although it isn't top of the range and there are better ones out there most likely by Maxi Cosi themselves the Rodi SPS is fantastic value for money.
