“ Manufacturer: Mothercare / Child Car Seat / For children from birth up to 13kg / Weight: 2.55kg / Side-impact protection „
I purchased this for my first baby back in 2007. It was only 39.99 then bought instore. It was much brighter and nice looking in real than it looked in the catalogue. It states its suitable from birth -15m (15kg) but i think it would be a squash by then mine were only in it until 9m and 11m. It was a light carseat but still being from mothercare, it had everything it needed with safety features but at a good price. The only downside would be its not compatible to go with a pushchair to make a travel system but i didnt need that anyway so was super value.
The cover is Black and the actual seat is black but then the fabric has white rectangles on it to make a subtle pattern. The straps are grey so can look a bit grubby but i always wiped them down with an anti-bacterial wipe and they cleaned up well. The head hugger matches the fabric seat. Both I machine washed and they came out perfectly clean and as new. They never faded. The seat was a good size inside i have seen some which are very small inside and when they are getting near 7/8months they are a bit squashed but this wasnt the case.
The head hugger fits well and the seat has two strap heights and is simple to adjust. I honestly couldnt fault this car seat. I used it for both my children and still sold it on so fantastic value. The seat is not isofix as you wouldnt expect it for the money. It is easy to fit in rear facing lep part of belt across bottom of seat above babys legs and chest part round back of seat. I fitted this in any car we had which over the two children was 4 cars it would have fitted in the only prob was the belt was a tight fit in one car but that was hubbys old banger for work.
This was the cheapest baby's first car seat we could find in Mothercare, and it's been a fantastic buy. The newborn head piece supports the baby's head very well at first, and is easily removable for when they grow older.
It only takes a couple of attempts to learn how to fit it into your car - if I can learn how to do it, anyone can! Then you can easily transport it into the house with you using the handle. The handle has three positions - top position for carrying, middle position behind the head rest, and bottom position on the floor, so it acts as a stand if the baby's sitting in it in the house.
It's easy to remove and wash the cover if the baby's had a little accident whilst sitting in it! It's not too heavy and it's a nice unisex, not too flashy design.
All in all, no complaints and good value for money.
We bought two of these as our twins first car seats! We got them at the end of 2007, which was rapidly nearing the time they would arrive! Having two children on the way, we had a very restricted budget - there were so many things that we had to buy two of, that spending a fortune neither nade sense nor was possible. So we were just looking for car seats that would provide the necessary protection in an accident, but weren't too fancy.
It was very easy to 'fit' the car seats in the back of our Vauxhall Vectra - there was loads of space for them, and they are easily strapped in and removed using the seat belts. This is very handy, as the carry handle meant that we could get the children ready and in the car seats in the house before we left, and that we could carry them out of the car easily at our destination.
The child is secured in the seat using a simple push button seat belt mechanism, which is easily adjustable. We found the twins could not escape from the seats while the car was moving, no matter how hard they tried!
The seats are meant to be suitable for babies up to 13kg, but we found that the twins had outgrown the seats before this weight. However, because of the low price, this wasn't an issue, and we moved on to forward facing seats suitable for up to 11 years of age.
Considering the price of other car seats, these are very good value, and I'm glad we chose a cheaper brand.
I have to give this Mothercare car seat top marks, it has really met my needs and more. We bought it in January 2008 (almost 2years ago) for my baby girl. Truth be told, I'd have loved a fancy, over the top, all singing, all dancing, bright pink one but having overspent on a cot, pram, changing table and all the other bits and bobs that go into keeping a baby we decided to go for this Mothercare Travel Tot.
Price and Availibility
The travel tot is made for and sold only in Mothercare Stores, I've seen it in both our small high street store and the larger Mothercare World store. It's current retail price is £49.99 and if you buy it on the Mothercare website it comes with free delivery.
Group 0+ rear facing car seat suitable from birth upto 13kg (29lbs)
Baby faces rearward in seat with integral harness.
Side impact protection.
Weight of the car seat: 2.55kg
To be fair, all car seats of this type seem very similar, if not the same in how they work.
The look of the car seat is quite contemporary, it has a modern black and white soft lining, with an abstract shape print. It's quite trendy and I'd suggest it's suitable for boys and girls. The base is made of hard black plastic, and the carrier handle is made of the same.
There are lots of things I like about this product.
It has a removable and washable cover which has been a godsend as I have a very messy baby! It washes well in the washing machine with no problems, and you can either dry it on the washing line, radiator or like me, chuck it in the tumble dryer.
It has a carry handle which is great when you're just popping in a shop for a minute and don't want the hassle of taking the pram out and transfering baby from car seat to pram. It also fits into those special supermarket trolleys that have a compartment on top for a car seat. Another good thing is that if you take the baby out of the car and in the house whilst in the travel seat, you can use it as a rocker when placed on the floor. This has sent my daughter to sleep many times!
The car seat isn't that heavy. I haven't compared the weight to other car seats, so I don't know whether it is light or heavy compared to other models. However, I found it easy to carry when my daughter was small. It did get a little heavy to carry once she was around 9months. (Mothercare suggests that this car seat is suitable up to 12-15months)
Another good thing was that the straps are easy to lengthen and shorten, there is a button that you can press and depress whilst pulling the straps to make them longer.
The best thing for me though, was that it was a unisex car seat and that it was that good quality, that it lasted really well and I was able to wash the cover and re-use for my new son who is now 7 months. ( saving me money! which is always a good thing!)
The Mothercare Travel Tot is a rear-facing 0+ car seat stated as suitable for up to 13kg/29lbs (approximately 12-15mths old). It is black and charcoal grey with modern, subtle grey and white patterns down the centre of the cover. It comes with a removable head support and the cover is washable. The carry handle can be moved into three different positions. The seat has an integral three-point harness. It is for fixing into the car with a seatbelt and not isofix.
~~THE GOOD POINTS~~
As my partner's car very often changes for work, we could not guarantee that every one would be compatible with an isofix or cabriofix car seat. Therefore, although the old styles seem to be less popular, we had no choice but to choose one that fixes in with a seat belt as they are universal.
The cover is well-padded which ensures your baby's comfort whilst travelling. The head support is an added bonus as you very often have to buy them separately. The colour of the cover is a drab grey and black making it is less distracting for the driver than the often brightly-coloured alternatives - this was a selling point for us, safety is more important than fashion.
The seat has side-impact protection giving us peace of mind that should the worst happen and we had a crash that we had minimised the risk of serious injury happening to our little angel.
Being fairly lightweight, it meant that carrying the seat and the baby together was not too difficult.
The movable handle made placing the baby in and out of the seat much easier. It is simple to use - just grip the two buttons and twist. It can also be shifted behind the car seat when indoors to tilt it forwards for your child to sit up more - this has been handy for us when weaning on the go.
**THE NOT SO GOOD POINTS**
Although it states on their website it is suitable for up to 29lbs in weight, our son has outgrown the seat in size at the age of 7mth and 19lbs in weight. He is well within the centiles for size and his shoulders were becoming too wide to be comfortable - for the past month he has been whining whenever we put him in it. We recently decided enough was enough and bought the next stage forward facing seat - he is now enjoying travelling with us again.
I am not sure if there is any other way of safely designing a first stage car seat any differently, however, the shape of it does not encourage good posture whilst lifting; my partner has strained himself slightly when carrying it from the car. This may be unavoidable so I will not be reducing my star rating.
It's hard to know what to look for as a first time parent when faced with so many different travel seats. I wanted something that combined maximum safety, comfort and ease of use. The last thing I wanted was to buy an all singing and dancing car seat that I found impossible to install in my car. We looked at lots of different models by different manufacturers, some that were compatible with the Isofit Bars (or the Mothercare equivalent) and others that could be fastened using seatbelts.
In the end we were recommended by a friend to look at the MY4 Travel system which came with the Mothercare Travel Tot care seat. Straight away I like the design. It was light weight and yet with its side impact protection and interior cushioning it looked robust and comfortable. I especially like the curved base which allows rocking and the detachable sun screen (not shown in this image), which effectively protects baby from bright sunlight. The seat is easy to fit into the car using a seatbelt - after watching my husband do it once I managed to fit it myself quickly and easily. Once strapped in it is very steady and secure. The button at the base of the chair makes it easy and quick to adjust the straps and the harness pads are both soft as well as easy to wash.
This car seat gives great piece of mind whenever baby travels with us in the car. I highly recommend this car seat.
* This is an Infant Group 0 car seat suitable from 0 to 15 aprox. As I purchased it as part of a travel system I do not know the it's price individually*
