I love the Bigjigs wooden toys as they are always good quality and I got the wooden tambourine to go in the music play box at home.
The tambourine is made from solid thick wood and there is a space on the side for placing your thumb. Because Bigjigs use such chunky wood, holding the tambourine is very comfortable and doesn't cut into your thumb as I have seen with other ones made of plastic.
The design is lovely- it has a real circus feel! The ouside of the wood has been painted in bright, jazzy colours and patterns. There is stripes, polka dots and block colours all designed to make the tambourine eye catching.
There are 2 cymbals situated in 3 separate parts of the wood which is to make the bell noise. All you need to do to make the noise is simply shape the tambourine.
There is a white fabric stretched tightly across the top of the wood which can be used as a drum although I wouldn't recommend using a stick to drum, only your fingers as a drum stick might tear through the fabric.
The tambourine is a good size for little kids to use, it measures 17 cm across. It has a age range for children 3 years and up but all the children in my house are a lot younger and love to play with it. There are no small parts in the toy and the wood is smooth so I think the age range could be lowered.
The tambourine is great for little kids, they love making music and the noise isn't too loud to become irritating to an adult. It helps children to become more creative and encourages their awareness of their senses.
I would gladly buy this product again, it currently sells at prices between £4 and £5 and although you can buy plastic tambourines for cheaper the Bigjigs one is very well made and is of a high quality.
When me and my son used to attend the local Salvation army playgroup, there would always be a musical session towards the end of the morning. My son and all the other children, thrived on these sessions. The play leader would place a huge box in the middle of the large circle we had all created. Within this box was a huge quantity of different hand held instruments.
One such instrument was this fabulous bigjigs tambourine. It is easily recognisable due to it's wonderful bright and eyecatching design. I remember that due to it's larger size and bright and snazzy apperance all the children would scramble for the few bigjigs tambourine's that were in the music box.
I was and still am very impressed with the quality of this tambourine. It is made with a great deal of emphasis on both the presentation and musical sound. Many times, I have bought my son a tambourine, only to be disappointed by the quality of the sound. However, this tambourine has a great sound which is light and not at all tinny. As far as children's instruments go this one is certainly much more pleasing to the ear.
This tambournine is quite heavy in weight, which makes it more difficult for small children to use. However, I think this toy is great as it encourages interaction and teamwork between your child and you. My son, loved working together with me to create the jangling sound. I also experienced his joy, when he was becoming bigger and more independent and was finally able to operate this tambourine with ease by himself.
Not only is this instrument great quality, it is also a fantastic looking item. It offers a great design around it's perimeter edge. I think that this is great not only for cosmetic reasons but also in order to allow children to become more recognising of bright colours. The colours are painted onto the wooden frame of the tambourine and therefore pose no risk of peeling off. I did notice though that due to heavy usage the brightness of the colours had flattened somewhat.
I am very impressed with this tambourine. It is durable and well made. I feel it takes the introduction of music very seriously. It has such a precise sound and is not particularly shrill as some cheaper tambourines. I do think these tambourines are not only well made, but they are able to be used throughout the individuals childhood. This is because it has such a fab design that it does not become childish and embarrasing to use.
If you are a teacher, I would strongly recommend that you purchase a few of these tambourines for your class. They are such a joyful instrument which will suit both male and female children. I think they are wonderful. Great for school concerts and assembly.
