My daughter loves to help me in the kitchen, so when she received this cooking set for Christmas; she was very excited to start using it. The set consists of a bowl, plastic imitation wooden spoon, and a heart shaped silicone cupcake tray mould. There is also a recipe card included which is made from a laminated card to prevent it from getting ruined.
Our set is pink, but upon researching you can also get the exact same set in blue. The design of the set is very child friendly and fun at the same time. Each piece of equipment has a name such as Betty the Bowl and Suzy spoon. Both the spoon and the bowl are adorned with a bright cartoon face which really brightens up the design of the set and makes it very appealing to children.
The bowl is a decent size for a child, and whilst it's not as big as perhaps an adult would use when making cakes, it perfectly ample for making a batch of cakes following my usual recipe which makes twelve small cakes. There is a lip on the side of the bowl to encourage the child to hold it whilst mixing with their other hand. Perhaps it could have been designed with a suction on the base of the bowl or even non slip grips as this would encourage even younger children to get cooking in the kitchen, but as I am always there with my daughter then I just hold the bowl for her if it starts to slip around a bit.
The spoon is definitely on a smaller scale than your average wooden spoon. This one is made from solid plastic and feels very comfortable to hold. I think too much bigger anyway would make it too cumbersome for a child to be able to hold and mix with properly.
The silicone heart shaped cupcake mould is made from a decent thickness of silicone. Too often in the past I have bought silicone moulds that just haven't stood up to the design. This one is lasting us well and it does clean up very easily after use, especially when our mix explodes over the top of the mould.
As the mould only takes six cakes, you will end up with quite large cakes. I have adapted slightly when we don't have enough mix and place small cupcake holders inside each shape to make smaller cakes, but generally we place the mixture directly into the mould.
The box states all pieces in the set are dishwasher safe, but I tend to wash them by hand. I would hate for the lovely faces to start wearing away as they hold a lot of the appeal for the baking set.
After looking on the internet, I have found that this set is available for £14.99. This is quite a high price for three items of cookware for children, but it does make a lovely gift. As it is paying for itself in terms of quality in the kitchen then it does seem to be proving its worth for the price.
Overall I think this is a lovely little set for children to start off with in their baking life. It gives them a sense of independence in the kitchen, and as it's so bright and cheerful, the set really does relate to children well.
My daughter loves to help me with the cooking and when I saw this cooking set at a friends house I went straight online and ordered one!
It is a cooking set which comes complete with Betty Bowl, Suzy Spoon,
a Silicone bun tray and a A5 recipe card. The items are all pink and have faces printed on them. They are very girly with long eyelashes and rosebud lips! The set also comes in blue.
The utensils are all made of tough plastic and are very durable. The spoon is quite flat so isn't very good for measuring liquids onto but it is fine for mixing and stirring.
The bowl will hold 1.5 litres and has a pouring spout and handle for holding. The baking tray has heart shaped moulds in it and is safe to use in the oven up to 230. There is no need to grease the tray either which saves one messy job!
All the utensils are freezer safe and on the box it states that they are all dishwasher safe although on the instruction leaflet inside the box it says handwash only! I have only ever washed them by hand and have had no problems.
The recipe card is laminated so is easy to keep clean.
My daughter loves this cooking set. It is easy to use and she loves the heart moulds. You can also buy an apron from the website which I got so she feels like a proper little chef! The bowl and spoon are a perfect size for her to get a good grip of and the tray is only 19 x 27 cm so is easy to handle for her.
The cooking set comes in an attractively designed box so would be perfect if buying as a gift.
This set is definately a winner in our house!
Kids Cooking Co are a relatively new company who featured on Dragons Den and launched onto the market in March 2008. They design cooking sets for children ... a range in pink and a range in blue.
We discovered the Pink Kids Cooking Set which consists of Betty Bowl, Suzy Spoon, a heart shaped silicone bun tray and recipe card late last year when visiting a toy shop. My daughter loves playing with her toy kitchen as well as making fairy cakes, crispy cakes, etc so when she saw a pink mixing bowl and spoon complete with character faces she immediately asked if Santa could bring it for her.
(The starter set as detailed above also comes in blue and consists of Burtie Bowl, Sammy Spoon and a silicone gingerbread tray and recipe card.)
Santa duly brought the pink starter set for my daughter which we bought at a local toy shop for 14.99; however, prices online do vary somewhat. You can also purchase the set or the items individually direct from Kids Cooking Co.
My first impression was that the set is expensive for what it is. However, when I worked out how much a mixing bowl, spoon and silicone bun tray would cost if purchased individually compared to a set in pink complete with faces, 14.99 is probably just about right.
The set is very good quality, the spoon is the perfect size for little hands and the bowl is a great shape and a good weight for children to manage. Previously when helping to make cakes my daughter has created a substantial mess; however Betty bowl is deep and wide enough to allow her to stir the mixture with minimal mess and has a large handle and spout which helps with direction when pouring the mixture into the bun tray.
Moving on to the bun tray, I have to admit that using this was our first attempt at cooking with a silicone accessory. The bun tray is a perfect design for little girls, 6 fairly deep pink hearts but after the first use I noticed that the tray released a strange smell (although I have learnt that is a common experience with silicone), since then the smell has subsided. The tray is easy to use and our muffins etc are easy to pop out after cooking, but the tray needs to be placed on a hard baking tray while in the oven. A real positive point to note, is that the tray is really easy to clean.
The spoon, bowl and baking tray are all dishwasher safe.
Kids Cooking Co have also designed chef hats and aprons to match the cooking sets. We have the pink version and this is also great quality.
Although the items are perhaps more than what you would expect to pay for children's cooking utensils they are great quality and a perfect size for little ones, an ideal way to get your little one interested in cooking.
