Thomas the Tank Engine Bathtub Crayons
Advantages: Good fun and work well
Disadvantages: Button is a little stiff
In the set you receive 6 crayons and a sponge we paid around £5 on Amazon for them although I have seen them in Tesco for a similar price. Of course they have Thomas the tank engine on the front of the box and immediately stand out to little one.
You receive 6 crayons each looks like a normal crayon apart from they are inside a small plastic holder that has grip on the handles so even when little ones hands are wet they can easily hold them and use them well. Each of the crayons has a different character from the show yellow has Harold, red has James, orange has Toby, light blue Thomas, dark blue Gordon and green has James although a lot of the colours match the colour of the engines my son was a little confused as Toby is orange when his colour is actually brown and Harold of course is white but after his first disappointment this was forgotten.
The sponge comes in the form of a train perfect of course for its Thomas theme this is perfect if little one wishes to wipe away their picture and start again but to be honest his was only used once or twice and then the children decided they would much rather leave their pictures for the whole of bath time an leave them for mummy to clean up. They would happily leave them there constantly and are often disappointed when they come back to find naughty mummy has cleaned the bathroom and wiped away their art work.
I did worry that maybe as these are water based colours designed to be wiped away that they would not be that right but the colours are actually really vibrant and the colours are really bright and attractive. They transfer as a bold colour on the bath meaning they stand out well on white surfaces and of course as there is a choice of colours it allows the children to be really imaginative and use a range of colours.
When they are being use they work just like a normal crayon well they transfer very well on the bath and tile's my children can draw whatever picture they please and it sits on the surface well. The colours do not run or fade when water splashes on them which worried me at first as I thought it may be difficult to get off but this is actually great as it means the picture stays put for the whole time they are in the bath they can admire their artwork.
The crayon only transfers on to the bath and tiles none of the colouring comes out in the water or on little ones hands which is great as of course bath time is a time to get clean and it would defeat the reason for being in the bath. There is no storage for the sponge and pens so we just keep them in our netted bag with the rest of the bath toys so they o not become lost and this way my children know they are for bath time rather than their colouring books.
When it comes to removing the crayon it comes away easily with a cloth and a little elbow grease it was not as nearly as hard to remove as I thought it may be and the tiles and bath are just as they were before the crayons were used. I have even left the crayons on overnight and cleaned it off in the morning and even though it was on the surface longer it did not make it any more difficult to get off.
The crayons last really well we brought these at Christmas for my son and they are still working now it helps there is a button to push the crayon up through the holder and they are nearly at an end now there is a small transparent strip so you can see how much of the crayon is remaining but considering they have been used by three children for 5 months I think this is really good lifetime for them especially at the price.
My only downside would be it has a button to press in so you can push the crayon up to the top of the holder and this is extremely tuff I found it really difficult to push them up as I bite my nails so I was unable to push it in far enough although my husband found it a lot easier. There is no way any of my children would be able to do it which does frustrate them a little but we just make sure that they have been pushed up before we put the children in the bath and this also prevents them from having too much of the crayon above the cover that they would snap in use.
The crayons do warn to try them on a part of your bath tub first and that they may cause stains on older or worn areas. Also it tells you to wash with disinfectant once a week but as this is part of our normal bathroom clean this gets done anyway. Of course as they are used with water you should make sure you dry them as much as possible after use and keep them clean so that no mould grows but as they have holes running around the crayon holder they drain off really easily and are not too much maintenance.
I would recommend these to any Thomas fan or even just for any child that loves baths and drawing they bring something a little different than other bath toys and we will purchase another set when these run out.
They are recommended from 3 years plus but my son receive them when he was 18 months old and he is able to use them well enough of course they require adult supervision but as they are being used for bath time you will be supervising your children anyway.
Summary: A great bath toy
