Clippasafe Cabinet Lock
Advantages: Stop children getting into the cupboards, cheap, easy to use, no fixtures
Disadvantages: They look naff, kids can still bang the doors and possible catch thier fingers
We have the cupboard locks where I work and they seem to be very efficient at keeping the little monkeys out the cupboards. We generally have over 50 children coming into the centre a week so they have stood up to a good solid testing. The children's ages range from babies up to children aged 5 years and none of them have succeeded in the mission to open the cupboard.
These can be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk for £1.99 the packaging states they says " child-resistant lock helps keep cabinets secure, Works on cabinets with handles or knobs, Easy for adults to use and install. These locks are operated by pinching two buttons on the side and pulling it along to open or push it in to close. The catch has teeth so you can adjust it to several different sizes. The catch works perfectly on doors that have handles that it can be thread through. I have not used the catch on cupboards with knobs and I am not sure whether they would work as well as they might come off the knobs.
These catches need to be fitted properly so the door cannot be pulled open at all as if there is some room for manoeuvre then the child could trap their fingers in the doors. The catches tend to allow the door to open very slightly enough to make that annoying banging noise but not far enough to get the children's fingers in.
The only thing I dislike about these catches are that they require me to use both hands to open the catch which mean I have to put down what I want to put in the cupboard. Also, I have not gone a hand free to hold the child back so they dive in before I have a chance. It can also be tricky to thread the two pieces of plastic through the hole when you are in a hurry or are trying to hold a child back.
Overall, this is a good product but in the home shoe laces or a scarf tied around the handles would work just as well. The catch can be removed easily and require no drilling or fixtures. The catches do the trick to keep children out of the cupboards they are cheap and easy but do no look very nice.
Summary: White plastic cupboard handles to keep kids out!
