Extending Metal Stair Gate
Advantages: lots, much prefered over other style of safety gate, bigger extension than most
Disadvantages: you have to screw it into you walls
I have 2 of these in my house, my first i put at the top my stairs, its been there for about 2 years now and is still going strong. i used it primarliy to keep my dog from going upstairs and then for its use to keep my child safe.
I have had 2 different types of stairgate on my lounge to keep my child safe while i do the housework cook dinner etc, and to keep the dog out of the lounge. My dog however chewed through the first 2 (they were the ones with the plastic clasp on the side handle) and one of them was especially designed as a pet guard and cost me twice the amount of money as a normal stair gate.
At the end of my tether i bought another one similar to the one upstairs. All i can say is it is brilliant and if i ever reccomend stairgates to any one it would be this one.
This stairgate extends much further than the regular ones, there is no floor bar (so nothing to trip over!) and has a one hand opening function, (yes i know most stair gates have this 'feature, but many, especially when new can be quite stiff) I have also found that although most stairgates are suitable up to approximatly 3 yrs old, my son and my neighbours son (she has one of the other plastic handle style ones) have worked out to open it, (the little devils!) Now i dont know about you but this has happened to my friend a couple of times mums and dads out there but how many time have you put the oven on then nipped to the toilet? or answered the phone, the child has got out and headed straight to the kitchen (luckily she caught him before he could hurt him self) but she promptly changed her stair gate to one of these types and now she can cook with the peace of mind that her child cannot open this one. I think this is due to the swing catch on the opening of the stair gate, it is quite stiff and you have to push the stair gate under it to release it, much more simpler, yet more difficult for a toddler than a lift handle.
There is a down side to this model as you have to screw it into the wall, but that nothing a bit of polly filla wont fix.
Summary: brilliant, i prefer it to the regular ones!!
