Extending Metal Stair Gate
Advantages: Inexpensive, quick to fit.
Disadvantages: Probably would not stop an intelligent toddler for long.
My Husband and I decided to get ourselves a puppy, while she is an adorable ball of fur and fun, her safety is the utmost in our minds as we can not be everywhere at once. During the summer months we like to keep our back door open for extra fresh air, usually this is not an issue but the new addition to the family made it so we had to either keep the back door shut or spend all day running up and down the garden supervising her adventures.
We decided the best option was to fit a safety gate, that way we can have the back door open and let Jessie out when we can keep an eye on her.
We had a quick look around for a safety gate and decided we did not need a fancy one as it was just to keep the little madam secure and it did not have to fight off toddlers. The one we chose was the Lindam Extending Metal Wall Fix Child Safety Gate. We sourced it from the online retailer amazon.co.uk for £17.00 including free super saver delivery, I had some left over Amazon vouchers so in the end it cost me 90p, bargain.
When the gate arrived it was packaged in a nice slim line box, not much bigger than the safety gate itself. In the box was the safety gate in two parts, this makes up the extending bit as you clip them together to cover the correct opening, and fittings to attach the gate to the wall/door.
Falling into gender stereo types I sat back while Mr H fitted the gate, it seems quite simple, the hinged side comes with a wall template to aid drilling and fixing, it genuinely is fool proof all the necessary screws are provided and the instructions for fitting are illustrated. Mr H chose to use his own screws as he always says the provided screws are not long enough. Mr H soon had our new piece of safety equipment attached and was soon demonstrating it for me.
The hinges are very safe and secure, all moving parts are covered to protect little fingers, the hinges are also easy to release so the gate can be lifted off the wall without the need to remove the wall fixings. The locking mechanisms on the opposite side of the door frame are very secure but again very simple, the gate simple lifts slightly into the cradle of the catch and is held secure with a little flippy bit, to open the gate you just need to push the flippy bit back and lift the gate slightly and hey presto it is open. I can imagine this would not stump an intelligent toddler for long but it stops our puppy in her tracks.
The gate is very strong and is made of durable white plastic coated metal; it is very easy to keep clean and is soon sparkling with a wipe down with a damp cloth. All possible places that little fingers could get trapped are covered with plastic caps.
One of the things I like about this gate is that when it opens the whole gate is moved, there is no inner frame that needs squeezing through or stepping over. The gate extends to fit openings between 63.5cm and 102cm, you do have to have the bars matching up for both sides to fit together properly, so while it is extendable you do have some restrictions on the sizes available.
In conclusion, this is a great basic gate, there are no fancy extra's it simply and safely gates off an opening, it is quick to fit, and easy to keep clean and keeps our puppy safely inside while we have the door open.
Thank you for reading.
Summary: I think this is a great little gate for keeping our puppy safe.
