Fisher Price Sounds 地 Lights Monitor
Advantages: nice light features, receiver is portable with a good range, run from mains or batteries
Disadvantages: can buzz slightly, antennae can get in way, nightlight quite dull
I decided that I needed a monitor that I could carry with me around the house and to the garden so I could get on with jobs whilst my baby napped. I also liked the idea of lights flashing to indicate the change in noise level in baby's room as well as hearing the actual sound as this would be a nice back up to have in case you don't hear the noise immediately. In the end, I opted for the Fisher Price Sounds 'n Lights Monitor which cost me ｣21.50 from Tesco.
The monitor is packaged in a plastic shell with cardboard backing. Within the packaging the two parts of the monitor - the transmitter and the receiver.
The transmitter part of the monitor is made of white plastic. It is a circular disc shape and sits flat on a surface in your baby's room. In the centre of the circle there is a nightlight with a plastic coating. This operates by pushing down on the circle to turn it on and pressing down again to turn it off. When on, a light yellow coloured light is emitted. The transmitter operates using an AC current and there is a flick switch on the rim to select one of two channels for it to operate in - A or B. You need to screw a white plastic coated aerial into the unit to allow it to operate - this is about 10cm long and very easy to attach. There is a push button on the rim to turn the unit on and off and a small green light glows when it is on so you can tell at a glance if it is switched on or not.
The transmitter has a power saving cord attached that will not use energy when the monitor is switched off. The transmitter operates solely by being plugged in to an electric socket.
The receiver is made from white plastic. It has a square base on which it stands and the top is rounded into a semicircle shape. Again, a white plastic coated antennae needs to be screwed into the unit, at the top left hand corner. There is a switch at the side of the receiver to select the correct channel (A or B - whichever the transmitter is set at) and a dial on the other side that turns the receiver on and selects the volume level. On the front of the receiver there is a speaker at the bottom to emit the noise and a clear plastic coating at the top covering the lights. There is a green light in the centre of the top section of the unit that illuminates when it is switched on. Along the rim there are five red lights that light up - the first one or two remain lit when on and the others light up to indicate the noise level in the room where the transmitter is.
The receiver can either be powered by plugging in to a mains socket or using 3 AAA batteries - meaning that it is portable. There is a plastic belt clip on the back of the handset so that you can clip it to your person to make it hands free.
The monitor is said to have 'crystal clear reception' up to 400 feet. I have never had cause to test this but have not had any problems where reception is 'out or range' or anything like that. The choice of the two channels, A and B, whichever is clearer is a good feature to have but, for us, there was little difference in the clarity between the two channels. Both A and B offer us a good, clear reception.
The transmitter sits well in my son's room - it is not wobbly and does not take up a great deal of space. It is a short distance from his cot but picks up all noises he makes well (I can hear his breathing if it is particularly heavy). The lead on the plug is a good length so the transmitter can be positioned a little distance from the socket - not too far though (although it's not a good idea to have trailing wires in a baby's room anyway). The nightlight is easy to operate and I think this is a lovely feature for a monitor to have, my only complaint is that it is not actually that bright and I certainly couldn't see anything by the light it emits (the idea of this being that it helps you to see when you 'peek' into your baby's room).
The receiver is lightweight, even with batteries in, and fits neatly into the palm of your hand. The lights shine brightly and catch your eye as they light up if baby is making noise. I also like the green light feature on both the transmitter and receiver to indicate that they are on - it is handy to see at a glance that you have switched them on. The belt clip is a nice idea to make carrying the receiver easier but I find that if I clip it onto my clothes the antennae gets in the way and often knock it off or inhibits my movement.
The reception is usually very good. We have experienced a little interference on occasions - usually when there is a storm or bad weather, much like you would with your television signal. Even then, you can still hear the sound ok. The receiver does 'buzz' slightly at times and you need to turn the sound down - which is why the lights are helpful.
Overall, this is a reasonably priced monitor - it is pretty mid-range on the price front. It allows you to hear your baby's nursery clearly and monitor your child when they are in bed. The light features are very good and useful - particularly if you are watching the TV and any noise may be slightly drowned out. I also love that the handset is portable as it allows me to get on with things but still supervise my baby completely. Definitely recommended.
