“ Brand: Hey Baby! / Type: Socket protector „
I noticed these Hey Baby socket covers when I was shopping in my local poundland whilst pregnant. I thought that I would be needing them at some point and so bought a pack and put them away. When my twins started crawling I thought it was time to do a bit of baby proofing to the areas where they played, it took me a while to find them but eventually I did!
As with most Poundland products the packaging is fairly simple and these socket covers come in a basic cardboard box. It does the job and is easy to open to get a socket cover out of and can be closed again afterwards to stop the remaining ones falling out.
The socket covers
These socket covers are very basic being made of fairly thin white plastic but they are lasting really well and showing no signs of wear. They are circle shaped which is slightly raised and have 3 plastic pins which fit into your plug socket. They are easy to push in, however they aren't as easy to get out. The sockets I use them in aren't frequently used for appliances and so it isn't a problem for me that they don't have the option to remove them using a plug like some of the more expensive brands.
I use my nails to prise these covers out of the socket but my husband manages to remove them and he has no nails. The raised rim gives you something to push against and it only takes a few seconds to remove.
My twins are now 2 and a half and have never taken any interest in the sockets which have these covers on. I think this is because when they are in place there is nothing to attract them to it and so they do their job really well.
Price and availability
I bought these sockets in Poundland getting 20 sockets for my £1 which I think is really good value.
Would I recommend?
Yes, 20 is far more than I needed and I was initially worried about them breaking off in the socket as they were so cheap. This hasn't been the case and for the price these are a good quality item.
- Why I Bought -
When my son was showing signs that he would soon be crawling I decided we needed to get some socket covers. Babies are so inquisitive and can't resist putting their fingers into things while exploring their surroundings. Obviously this would be very dangerous with an electrical socket so socket covers really are a baby safety essential. I came across this pack of 20 covers in Poundland.
- The Socket Covers -
These socket covers have a very simple design. They are made completely from white plastic which feels strong and durable. They have the three prongs you would find on a plug so they fit perfectly into the sockets. They sit flush so that they can't easily be prised out by a baby/toddler. On the outside they have a small ridge around the edge which makes it easier for an adult to remove them from the socket. They don't slide out easily as this would make it too easy for a child to remove them but they are easy enough for me to remove if I get a good grip on them. When my son first started crawling he would go straight for the sockets at lightning speed but he soon discovered that with these covers the sockets are actually quite dull so he lost interest. Now he rarely shows any interest in playing with the sockets. With these covers the worst he can do is turn the switch on which would have no effect with the cover in place and therefore is not dangerous. My son has only done this a couple of times. On a few rare occasions he has tried to remove the cover but without success. They are white and blend in very well with our standard white sockets. This is good as it doesn't draw my son's attention to the sockets and also they are barely noticeable to anyone else who comes to our house. They wouldn't look so good if you have the fancier metal finish sockets though. I feel confident that my son won't be able to remove these and having them there has made him completely uninterested in the sockets anyway. I would advise that parents start using these before their child is crawling so that you have time to get used to using them. You need to remember to put the cover back on after using the socket and it can take a while to get used to this.
- Price and Availability -
This pack of 20 is currently available from Poundland for a bargain £1. This is outstanding value and far cheaper than any others I have seen. I had a look at socket covers in a local independent shop and a pack of four was being sold for £4 which I think is very overpriced. I think these covers are just as effective as some of the ones sold by leading baby safety brands.
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend these socket cover as I can't fault them in any way. They blend in, fit well, sit flush, are made from durable plastic, stop my son accessing the sockets, aren't too difficult for adults to remove and they are really cheap.
