We have a static van at the coast which means that during the summer months, we spend a lot of time travelling, in a bid to try and keep Lauren a little happier in the car, we decided to invest in this.
We purchased this from Toys R Us and at the time, there was a three for two promotion running on all Lamaze products. This normally retails for around £15 and it is available from most toy and baby shops.
What I liked about this is that the main body is designed to be a sunshade too however I did find that because this is circular in shape and measures around 35cm in diameter, it doesn't quite cover enough of the back window to work correctly.
To the top of the shade is a little plastic hook which locks over the top of the car window which I prefer to the ones with the suction cups as I find they are more secure and also, they don't leave any unsightly marks on the window. Because of the way this is attached to the window, I used to place on top of our existing sunshade.
The shade part of the toy is very brightly coloured, with images of snakes, butterflies and flowers on. About half way down the shade is protruding blue bar which has three little soft toys hanging from them; a bumble bee, a butterfly and a ladybird. Each animal makes a different noise, the bee rattles, the wings on the butterfly has that crinkly material inside to makes a rustling noise when touched and the ladybird squeaks. All the animals are brightly coloured and very eye catching, by far her favourite was the butterfly, she used to sit for ages just making his wings rustle so I think this is great way of enabling children to understand cause and effect.
I did find that when Lauren was really young, she did struggle to reach the shade but as she grew older, she would happily sit and fiddle or kick the dangly bits. The bar can be removed completely from the shade and so can the animals as they are all attached with velcro so when she was younger, I used to remove these for her. The velcro element also means that they can be attached to other items such as her playmat, cot and even pushchair.
One of the added bonuses of the toy is that it is suitable from birth.
I would recommend this as a toy but not really as a sunshade and for that reason; this gets 4 out of 5 stars from me.
Thanks for reading.
My sister is a nursery nurse in a private nursery she works with babies from 2 months up to 12 months, she swears by lamaze toys yet i could quite see the fascination for them myself to justify the price of them.
My sister bought the girls the lamaze ride & play shade when they were born for them, i am sure it costs around £14.99 from argos.
Lamaze ride & play is a sun shade for the car with dangly toys like a mobile. The shade is not that big around 8 inches and is round so does not block out much of the window or sun. The shade is white with tiny mesh holes, the background of the sun shade has lamaze on it with the colourful flowers and caterpillar.
The toy bar is velour and sticks out a few inches from the shade to let the toys dangle down. The toys consist of a butterflie, bee and ladybird, each has colourful ribbon on them. Each toy makes a noise a squeak, rattle and a crinkle very cute toys move with the car.
The shade is stuck to the car window with two small suction cups. These stick well and the shade has not come off. The shade has to be low down on the bottom of the window so baby can see and swing at them.
As a sun shade this is useless as a toy it is nice to look at but honestly my girls never bothered with it as tiny babies they would look up and watch the toys that's about it.
I have recently passed this lamaze ride and play to a friend who has a three month old baby she loves it and so does her baby son.
I would not recommend this as a shade but as a toy maybe , it is nice to look at but will only give two stars as i don't feel it is worth the money or anything special.
I have been looking after my niece a lot recently and bought this sunshade to keep her amused whilst I am driving. It cost me £12.95 and I bought it from Mothercare.
It is a sunshade that has toys attached to it. The shade itself isn't very big, probably 8-9 inches in width so it isn't the best shade that I have used but I bought it more for the entertainment value than anything else.
The shade attaches onto the window by 2 suckers on each side. They stick well and I haven't had any problems with it falling off. There is also a hook which you can attach to the window, the only problem with using this is that unless you have the window quite low down the baby can't reach the toys.
The shade itself is very colourful, it has a snail and lots of flowers and leaves in the background and has multicoloured stripey edging that pads around the wire frame.
There is a bar which is made out of foam and is in a semi circle shape. It attaches to each side of the shade and is stuck on with velcro so is removable if needed. The bar has 3 toys attached to it which move and dangle along with the movement of the car.
The toys are very colourful, there is a bee which rattles, a butterfly whose wings are crinkly and a ladybird who squeaks when pressed. The toys are all soft and chunky enough for the baby to get a good grip on them.
This shade is suitable from birth and my niece is now 5 months old and absolutely loves it. When she first came in the car she would just watch the toys and was fascinated with them, but now she is getting bigger she likes to reach out and grab them. The velcro keeps the bar firmly attached to the shade and she has never managed to pull it off ( famous last words!).
I would recommend this sunshade, not for the protection against the sunlight because the shade isn't big enough for that, but for the novelty and amusement factor.
A friend gave us a Lamaze Ride and Play Fun Activity Toy just recently for our three month old son. He adores it! It is intended to be used in a car for keeping babies entertained on journeys. We do not have a car but I attached ours to chair and it hangs next to our son when I leave him on the floor to kick and play. It has lots of velcro bits so it is easy to attach to different surfaces. It hangs down so that there is a circle at the backgrouns and a semi-circular bar sticks out in front with three toys that hang down. One side of the toy is black and white, ideal for very young babies who have poor eye sight and cannot focus easily. The other side are colourful for older babies. The semi-circular tube is removable so you can turn it around to show either side of the toy. It is also just the right thrickness for small hands to grab and play with. Our son really enjoys playing with it and it is the first toy he has reached out to grab.
It can also provide some shade on the window of a car. It is pretty versatile and I would highly recommend it. They sell them in a local toy store for about ten pound.
