Advantages: Good quality, easy to fit, extension available, opens with one hand
Disadvantages: Bar across the bottom is a trip hazard, sometimes bangs into place when it closes
I didn't think I would need to buy any stair gates when my daughter was a baby as our family were eligible for a local scheme that gives out some safety equipment for free. The local council came out and fit two stair gates, one for the bottom and one for the top of the stairs, perfect! Then when I moved my daughter from a cot to a bed I had a really hard time getting her to sleep, that was when I decided to go out and buy a stair gate to keep her in her bedroom. My mum has a stair gate at her house too, mainly to stop the dogs getting upstairs, my daughter had already mastered this stair gate so I had to make sure I was getting one that had a button on the top and bottom to open it so my daughter couldn't open it herself.
The gate that I bought was this Lindam Easy Fit Premium safety gate it cost me £25 from Kiddicare. This one is a little more expensive than the one my mum has at her house but as my daughter can open that one it would have been no good going for the cheaper option in this case.
After receiving the package I realised there is no assembly required, all I had to do was secure the gate in the door frame, perfect. This is quite simple to do, just pull the bolts through the four holes (two at the top, two at the bottom), then twist the round nuts until they are tight against the wall. I did each of these four nuts in turn and wondered why the gate still wasn't secure in the outside of the gate, after tightening each nut again I realised I hadn't tightened them enough and soon the gate clicked into place.
The safety gate is suitable for openings between 75cm and 81cm, I remember measuring the door frame and it was a tiny bit over 81cm but I thought I'd wait and see how big the gaps between the gate and the frame were before ordering an extension piece straight away. Once I had put up the gate I decided we didn't need an extension, the gaps either side of the gate aren't very big although there was still a lot of bolt left to use if I had a wider frame, however if it was any wider I would have purchased an extension so that it doesn't compromise the safety of the gate.
The mechanism for opening the gate is a simple push and squeeze system where you have to push the button on the top of the handle then squeeze in the bottom, this is easy to do one handed so you don't have to worry about getting through the gate if you've got a hand full. The gate can then open either way towards you or back the other way. It has a locking mechanism on the bottom for added piece of mind.
When I first installed the gate it took a little getting used to as it has a bar at the bottom, our stair gates don't have these so we haven't really looked for something on the floor when going through the gates. This has resulted in a few stubbed toes and my daughter tripped over it once but we've got the hang of it now! I wouldn't say this gate would be suitable for a top stair gate, not only should you have a secure stair gate at the top the bar across the bottom does increase the risk of tripping up.
When closing the gate, after giving it a swing back it secures into place on its own accord, where this would be great for keeping children out of certain rooms etc. we only use this in my daughters bedroom at night time so it is quite a pain. If I go in to pull the covers back over my daughter I have to push the gate back into place gently as swinging it back makes it bang into place quite loudly.
I'd definitely recommend this Lindam stair gate. Although it would be no good as a safety gate for the top of the stairs, it does the job I want it to do perfectly and keeps my daughter in her bedroom at night time. The price is a little more expensive than the basic Lindam gate but it's still not too expensive.
