Mothercare Corner Cushions
Advantages: protect heads, no damage to furniture
Disadvantages: come off easily once removed the first time, very obvious
When my son started to become mobile, I knew it was time to child proof the house and make his living environment as safe as it could possibly be. One of the things I was most wary of (along with the stairs and electrical sockets) was the sharp edges on some of our lounge tables. This particularly concerned me when he was starting to pull himself up and take some steps as they are at his head height and the corners could lead to a nasty injury.
We purchased a mothercare home safety starter set for £12.99. This contained 20 pieces and included 4 corner cushions. Ours looked slightly different to the one pictured above - being a white plastic, more rounded with a grooved appearance and much more conspicuous on the furniture. This, I guess, works both ways - they make your furniture less attractive but equally it is easy to spot if one has fallen (or been pulled!) off.
The corner cushions have a self adhesive strip along the edge so you simply remove the backing, position onto the table corner and push and hold in place firmly for a few seconds. This gave quite a good hold. I was impressed with how easy these were to apply and how secure they felt. Over time, these have served their purpose well - protecting my son from several bumped head incidents. However, once my son got older, he became very interested in them and began picking at and pulling them. Sure enough, these became loosened over time and, once removed one or two times, began to lose their sticky and became ineffective. They didn't, however, cause any damage to my furniture like I had been worried they might. Maybe this is the trade off between causing damage and remaining in place under greater pressure.
Overall, these are good for protecting a young child from sharp corners on furniture but they do not stand up very well to the sort of wear and tear you would expect with a young child in the house. I would definitely recommend corner cushions for tables etc but I suspect there may be better ones available to try.
