Advantages: Versatile, durable safety aid for bedtime, easy to assemble
Disadvantages: Difficult to fold down sides
The transition from cot to bed is another great milestone in the journey of a baby into a fully fledged independent little person. Our oldest son remained in his (converted) cot bed until he was nearly five years old. We simply needed to remove the sides of the cot bed and, for extra reassurance, fitted one of these Mothercare fabric based bed guards on to the open side of his bed, to prevent him from rolling out and injuring himself during the night. That guard remained in active use for a good year or so, until we were confident that he no longer needed it.
The guard has been in storage in the loft since then but, thankfully, is still in as good as new condition, making this particular item even better value for money. The guard is still available in Mothercare stores and online for between £19.99 - £24.99. (It's currently on offer at the lower price.) It has certainly been a cost effective purchase for our family as we are now using it for our youngest son.
Due to the imminent arrival of a new sibling, we recently moved our youngest son out of his cot bed straight into the bottom level of a bunk bed, as he now needs to share a bedroom with his older brother. The benefit of using this type of child's bed guard is that it can be adapted and expanded to fit under different sizes of mattress so it is very versatile. Having been used for a smaller sized cot bed, the guard also fits under a standard sized single bed simply by adjusting the metal poles which fit right underneath the mattress and curl across the outer edge. The side piece then remains in place across the open side of the bed, acting as a physical barrier for any wriggly toddlers. Our original instruction booklet has long since been mislaid but the process was incredibly simple and self-explanatory that my husband was able to reinstall this without any problems.
As the guard consists of quite lightweight poles and fabric/netting, it is reasonably lightweight making it suitable for travel. We took the guard with us on our recent break to Butlins, for example. The barrier piece is relatively large and cumbersome but it did fit into our averagely sized car boot and certainly takes up less room than a travel cot. At our destination, the guard was re-assembled and attached to a different bed within a matter of minutes so that our youngest was safe and could go to sleep in familiar comfort.
One of the supposed features of this guard, is that it can actually be folded down for easier access (to change bedding, for example.) I find it quite tricky to fold down in this way, as it involves pressing in plastic buttons either side of the guard. In all honesty, I just leave this in position at all times and don't generally need to fold it down. Our youngest has enough room to climb in and out either side of the guard so it doesn't create a major inconvenience. He has recently taken to actually climbing over the barrier to get into his bunk but, surprisingly, the guard appears to be pretty resilient and durable and isn't showing any signs of damage at all!
I'd have no hesitation in recommending this to any parent as it is so simple to use and just provides that extra reassurance at bedtime. Even though the poles actually fit under the mattress, they don't cause any discomfort or inconvenience, certainly not when used under a spring mattress. Our guard has seen a good few years of active service and is still going strong, so it has proved itself to be an excellent purchase.
Summary: A great buy for parents
