Advantages: Peace of mind

Disadvantages: None for me

My son is the ultimate explorer and this summer as the weather got warmer I decided it was important to discuss with my son the importance of not climbing near windows. He responded by discussing Humpy Dumpty and while I tried to explain to my son in terms a three year old would understand that All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't put Humpty together again and All the kings horses and all the kings men would not be able to put him back together again. I was left however feeling anxious and decided it was time to invest in some window locks.

I visited my local B& Q warehouse but they informed me that they no longer stock child safety equipment so next I decided to visit mother care. I did not want to buy a cheap item when it came to such important purchase but Mothercare is a name I trust. In store the Window locks were £5.99 for a pack which contains one window lock but were on a three for two offer so was able to get the three locks for £11.98. Sadly this offer has since finished.

As with anything so important it is important to get these fitted correctly so I actually had a friend come and fit them as I wasn't confident that my DIY skills were competent enough. The packs do contain all you need to fit the window including screws for a wooden window frame however it does advise that if you have a different type of window you need to order the screws separately.

It took my friends about less than fifteen minutes per window and using them is simple. I already have normal window locks and a latch on all my windows so opening them can be quite fiddly. The locks are now slightly different to the pictured The One's I have purchase are like a miniature window catch but only open to about two inches wide. It does have integrated holes with a push down catch to secure the position which also means that you can reduce the gap in the window. If a child were able to open the push down leaver there is a second security device which stops the window opening any with an additional two plastic prongs which stop the opening bar passing through the catch.

These catches are white and so don't co- ordinate with my windows but I am more concerned about the safety issue than aesthetics'. These do feel relatively sturdy. These have been fitted in our upstairs windows for about a month and my son has not made attempts to get out the window but will now shout through my bedroom window when I am in the garden and it doesn't send me into a blind panic. I have also been able to keep my son's bedroom window open at night when it has been hot to prevent him getting to warm.

I am more than happy with my purchase of these items and strongly recommend that anyone who has a young child gets some fitted as toddlers do not understand real dangers and consequences. You may be able to buy cheaper than Mothercare but I do suggest you don't buy a bargain brand as this may be false economy.

While I do take security from these locks I do think it is important to still teach children the importance of safety as one day they will be in a house without window locks. Safety equipment is not designed to replace Parent supervision.

Summary: Highly recommended if fitted correctly
