Advantages: What is right with it?
Disadvantages: Doesn't hold securely, falls off with pressure put on it.
My mother in law purchased one of these Safety 1st Safety Barriers which are supposed to be an easy to move, travel type of baby gate. She purchased it for her house for when we visit her as she has easily accessible stairs and I was always worried about my daughter getting up them.
The Safety 1st Safety Barrier is a nice and neat little invention which folds down flat and fits into a little bag for storage or for travelling. As far as I know, this product only comes in blue with a mesh middle so you can see through it.
My mother in law decided to wait until we got to her house to fit this in place as she thought we knew best with these things so that was what we did.
The problem with this Safety Barrier is the installation of it. We had it on the bottom step which left a little gap at the bottom though not big enough for my daughter to get under. The barrier comes with 4 pressure wall stoppers like most stair gates do - 2 for the top and 2 for the bottom. The wall stoppers were the problem as as they just didn't seem to tighten no matter what we tried. We got it into place and we decided that we should test it first before leaving it unattended for our daughter to go near.
I am so glad we actually tested it first because of the problems with the stoppers. I got down to my daughter's level and pushed gently where she would be able to push which was sort of in the middle towards the bottom. As soon as I did this with minimal pressure, the bottom caved in and the barrier flipped foward on to me so 1) it didn't hold and couldn't withstand pressure and 2) if it had been my daughter who had been pushing it, it would have landed directly on her.
We had followed all the instructions properly and we have baby gates fitted all over our own house so we know how to fit them but this was just an absolute piece of rubbish. We simply took the gate down and put it back in the box, not at all willing to try and risk it. My mother-in-law returned it to where she had bought it and invested in a Lindam one instead which was just fine.
I do not recommend this product as I feel it is completely unreliable.
