Safety 1st Slam Stopper
Advantages: Safely stops doors slamming and protects little fingers
Disadvantages: Gets a bit dirty after a bit
We actually owned these Slam Stoppers before my 2 year old sister was born, where we used to live was high up on a hill and if the back door was open at the same time as ANY window in the house all the doors would slam so loud that we were always scared of getting our fingers trapped.... even though none of us were babies at the time!
This is a proper clever and basic idea but it works, there are a few little problems with it but the relief at not having to worry about crushed fingers is worth it.
The Slam Stopper is a horseshoe shaped piece of foam, not the sort of foam that feels light and squashy but more like the stuff you see round pipes when there is work being done to them. It says on the packaging that it's specially designed dense foam and I'd say that was about right because the foam is quite hard to the touch and it has to be to absorb the door banging.
To fit it you just slide the foam onto the edge of the door making sure you remember to put it out of the reach of any kids in the house, this is important because the foam grips the door itself and is not screwed in or anything so you need to make sure kids can't just pull the foam off and then slam the door on their fingers! On the packet it says to put it about half way up the door to get the best effect and I think that's about right and having ours just above the handle is perfect.
The main problem is that once you've got the Slam Stopper fitted on your door then the door will not close completely, that's a problem if you rely on your doors to keep a crawling baby or walking toddler in one place but as long as your child can't reach the door handle you can easy remove the foam and close the door yourself. You've just got to remember to put the foam back into place when you open the door again.
You don't need to buy loads of Slam Stoppers because you can take them on and off plenty of times and it doesn't affect how good they grip the door, we've got 3 and swap them round the doors that need to be protected and that's been fine for years now.
They get a bit discoloured after a bit and can't be put in the washing machine to clean them but that's a minor thing when it comes to keeping kids safe. The main thing is that the foam doesn't lose shape or start coming loose on the door and a pack of 2 will last you for ages as long as you don't mind it looking a bit grubby after a bit.
Recommended..... save your fingers!!!
