Sunshine Kids Easy View Ultimate Back Seat Mirror
Advantages: Able to see baby in a rear facing car seat stays in place well doesn't infer with driving
Disadvantages: Can be frustrating to get it into place to focus
When driving in our car with our son in his baby rear facing car seat being able to see him via a mirror is an essential safety concern and this mirror is one I would definitely recommend to other parents.
We bought ours from Mothercare but it is also available from Amazon too. It is a simple concept really a large convex mirror attaches to the headrest and you adjust it to be able to see your baby without having to turn around as you can see them via the reflection in the rear view mirror.
The mirror sits in a pad via a ball and socket type joint attached to the pad are adjustable straps which has a clip to fasten it to the headrest. Fitting the pad and mirror to the headrest is very straightforward and really takes only a matter of minutes. We put it on slightly loose and then tightened the straps to get a snug fit to the headrest and there the pad has stayed for the past 4 months without coming loose at all despite York's many speed humps and poor road surfaces at times. Once you have the pad in place it then a bit fiddly to get the mirror into the correct place so you can see your baby. Now maybe it is my dyslexia but I often seem to adjust it the wrong way so I can see the door or adjust to far down so I can see his legs and not his face. I have to admit this is frustrating to do and best if you do it with two people otherwise you are jumping backwards and forwards from your seat to adjusting it. The longest it has taken me is 5 minutes which I admit is not long but I don't have much patience for fiddling around with things really. Once in place it does stay there again despite speed humps and uneven surfaces the mirror remains firmly in place and focussed on my son. The reason I like it is it means I can see my son if he is getting upset about something for example I can see if his hood on his coat has covered his eyes or if he has had some spit up. Mainly I use it to check when he has gone quite is he ok and it is generally that he has gone to sleep. My son also likes to look in the mirror at himself and often is smiling away at himself and me in it which is great for keeping him happy in the car when he doesn't have his bigger brother next to him.
We have our son situated behind the driver's seat the reason for this is down to our narrow drive way which means it is virtually impossible to get the car seat out of the passenger side next to the house. Even with the headrest of the driver's seat I am still able to fully see my son in his seat without any problems with the view being blocked.
I find that the mirror does not interfere with my driving and there is still more than adequate views of the road in the mirror and I am less distracted by worry or having to turn around and look at him at junctions and I can be more responsive to pulling in if he is upset or if my older son is there to ask him to move the hood from his eyes for example.
My only problems with the mirror really is how fiddly it can be to get it so you can see your baby's face but once this is accomplished it does stay put for the whole journey. However I do find at times when taking my son in and out of his chair or lifting the car seat out that I can knock the mirror so have to fiddle around again the next time. This however is a very minor issue really and the peace of mind it gives me to be able to check on my son when he is upset or to see he is ok when he has gone quite more than justifies the £10 price tag I paid for it. The price does vary from £8-12 depending on the retailer but it is a good baby safety product
Overall this is defiantly a product I would recommend to other parents who want to be able to see their little one in rear facing car seats whilst driving it is easy to set up it stays in place and bar some frustrations with getting it into focus it does its job very well 4 stars from me I am deducting one for my frustration of focusing it.
