Advantages: reliable, cheap
Disadvantages: none
Whilst I was pregnant I wanted to make sure I have everything I would possibly need and more for when my daughter was born. One of the most important things in my mind was a baby monitor. I'm not one to worry a lot so I didn't think that it would be really necessary for me to have video and heart rate checker and all of the other gadgets they have now days. I am more of a traditional person, and all of that technology would scare me even more, thinking that something was likely to happen. Neither the less I did feel like I would benefit from a baby monitor so I would be able to hear when she wakes up and if she has a cough or cold.
I liked the look of the tomy walkabout baby monitors as soon as I saw it. Tomy is a well know make so it gave me piece of mind knowing that they would be reliable. They were presented well, with a clear description of the monitors on the box. The front panel opened by Velcro so you could have a clear view of the monitors before you bought them. My first impression is that they were small and attractive looking, (well not something that would look out of place in my daughters pretty nursery anyway.)
The monitors are of 2 different designs, one to go in the baby's room and one to stay with you. The one for the baby's room has a night light that can be turned on and off from either monitors. I didn't find this too hand because I would always go upstairs anyway just to check it had been turned off. The monitor that you keep has coloured dots going round in a circle going from green to red. This shows how loud the noise produced from the upstairs monitor was. The lights are also really bright so they capture your attention if you don't manage to hear the sounds. On this monitor there is also a volume control button, which if turned loud enough, is defiantly loud enough to wake you up. There is also a control which allows you to talk through to the other monitor. I found this very handy as I was able to sooth her until I got to her room.
These monitors can either be plugged in at the sockets or powered by batteries. When I first used them I put batteries in them but they ran out rather quickly. I didn't use them after that as I didn't really need to; I just kept them plugged in the sockets. I didn't need to go out of range far enough that I would be able to hear or see it. I still think it is very handy to have though, for people who do need to move around a lot.
These baby monitors are very durable, they have been dropped and played with and they do not have a scratch on them and still work perfectly fine. They have been very very useful to me and I would highly recommend them.
These can be bought for around £ 30 at Amazon.
