Advantages: soothing, bright colours, holds baby's attention & aids sleep
Disadvantages: none
I received the Tomy Winnie the Pooh Sweet Dreams Lightshow as a present for my newborn baby and I would go as far as to say it has been one of, if not the, most helpful presents we received!. The Lightshow acts as a mobile at bedtime and naptime to help soothe baby to sleep and assist them in learning to settle themselves.
The box itself is about the size of a small plate and 2-3 inches thick. On the back there is a circular ring that screws on and off to allow the box to be attached to the side of the cot safely. On the fron there is a screen which lights up when turned on and shows various winnie the pooh characters floating across the screen. Also there are push buttons of winnie, tigger and piglet which baby can press and they make snoring sounds. There is also a round ball shaped bee button which baby can manipulate.
On top there is the projector which projects a lightshow onto the ceiling at bedtime, a sliding volume button and a sliding switch to select day or night (bedtime or naptime). On the side there is an on/off switch that can also be used to select the tune to play. There are three different lullabies to select from.
The design is bright and eye catching so it catches baby's attention. For me, the best feature is the lightshow which projects moving images onto the ceiling for baby to watch, making them sleepy. We have used this in our baby's bedtime routine for weeks and now I don't know what we'd do without it! The lullaby is soothing (if a bit repetitive) and there is the handy feature that this switches itself off after several minutes (hoping that baby will be asleep.....!). This means that we can just switch this on and leave the room. Usually when I return to check, baby is either very sleepy or asleep.
The negatives of this product are that it takes 4 x AA batteries (which do run down fairly quickly) and that in the lighter evening, the lightshow doesn't really show up on the ceiling very well. You can move the box closer to the ceiling to rectify this however. My baby is too young for all the features - for example the push buttons, or the naptime feature but I am certain that as he gets older these features will be used!
As I received this as a gift, I do not know what was paid for it but, after a quick look online, it appears to retail at around £20. For the use that we already get out of this, I believe that this is great value. Plus, as our baby gets older, we will get even more use from it. For £20, this is exceptional value and I would highly recommend this to anyone. It really helps bedtime become more relaxing for our little one (and us!).
Summary: Great sleep aid for baby
