      Pretty cake decorations from Asda

      Asda White Chocolate Stars:

I really love making batches of cupcakes and I am always on the lookout for new cake decorations to make my baking look fantastic. One such purchase was these Asda White Chocolate Stars.

The white chocolate stars comes in a flimsy clear plastic tub with a silver plastic lid. This packaging seems to be standard throughout the Asda range of cake decorations which is a shame as the lid doesn't fit securely so if the pot gets knocked over the lid can easily come off spilling the contents everywhere.

The stars are tiny, maybe 4mm at there widest point. To be honest I find really tiny cake decorations cute so these are already off to a good start! They are a lovely rich, creamy colour similar to that of a milkybar, even in the tub they look cute! These look great on pale coloured icing/frosting but they look even better on darker coloured icing and especially on dark or milk chocolate. If you do sprinkle them on melted chocolate make sure it's reasonably cool first as being so small they can melt very quickly, it's best not to handle them directly if you can help it for the same reason. I think they would make a great chocolate fudge cake/tray bake or even look amazing on chocolate mouse.

Smell wise these have quite a strong, creamy white chocolate scent that reminds me of really good quality white chocolate. The taste is also similar to that of good quality white chocolate which impressive for the price. You can clearly taste these even with cake and lot's of yummy frosting. To be honest white chocolate (other than milkybars) isn't really my favourite flavour but my Mum loves it and she assures me that these are really delicious.

These have surprisingly few ingredients, just sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder and an emulsifier and they are suitable for vegetarians. The shelf life on them is about six months, at least based on the best before date on my tub.

The stars cost just 80p for 45g which is easily enough stars to decorate a couple of dozen cupcakes or two or three large cakes. Asda currently (April 2011) have these on offer for four packs for £2.00 and the offer includes a range of their cake decorations making them even better value for money.

I think these are awesome, they make a big visual impact and the cupcakes I make with these are always chosen first so they certainly look appetising. I recommend these to make your baking easily stunning and I can see them becoming a regular feature in my kitchen. Ten out of ten from me!
