Asda Smart Price Milk Chocolate
Advantages: Decent enough taste, good melt factor
Disadvantages: Not very chocolatey
So some people may have noticed that I do like my chocolate. I'm not a snob though. I'll be happy to enjoy a nice Hotel Chocolat product or scoffing, like I am today a value bar of chocolate.
Saying that, I'm trying to save money and it was only 30p for a 100g bar.
The packaging is nothing special just white and green with only the word 'Milk' to distinguish it from the 'Dark' variety. There's no real aroma when you open the packet even when you lift it to your nose which is quite disconcerting.
It's a nice looking chocolate though. It's quite a light brown, almost glossy colour which does make you want to try it.
Mouth wise its a big creamy hit. We're talking a big hit of warm creaminess that just coats the mouth and slips round the tongue.
We then anticipate the chocolate oozing its way through this creaminess. And we anticipate and wait, oh yes there it is, a gentle caress after a solid whack of cream which I find slightly disappointing.
Maybe its time to see exactly what's in this. Well, its apparently 29% Cocoa Solids, no mention of cocoa powder but I really wouldn't have guessed that. The main ingredient is of course sugar, but whilst its sweet, not too-achingly so.
Of course its the milk powder, cocoa butter and vegetable oil that give it that creamy, melting texture which is, it has to be said, my favourite thing about this chocolate.
It's fantastically comforting!
It's quite obvious that this isn't the best quality, but it is better than that really cheap stuff you often give in bargain Easter Eggs.
Interestingly, at college my daughter had to design and market her own chocolate bar. In the pursuit of this she arranged a blind tasting test of several different brands including more popular ones, such as Dairy Milk. And this one turned out to be the most popular! That of course was a bunch of 17-19yr olds, perhaps not the biggest connoisseurs of good chocolate.
For something to give the kids, or just as a comforting chocolate fix then this isn't the most unpleasant thing you can eat.
