Cadbury Double Decker
Advantages: A really nice combination of flavours
Disadvantages: The calorie and fat content
On a recent Christmas shopping trip I was in need of a quick snack to boost my sugar levels, being a diabetic if I was at home I would probably have had some sugar and a healthy snack however I wasn't and decided to opt for a chocolate bar. I spotted that Boots (where I was currently shopping) were selling Cadbury Double Deckers, this was a chocolate bar I hadn't had in a long time so I decided to have one and see if they were as good as I remembered. Double Deckers were always one of my favourite chocolate bars when I was a child so I was hoping it was going to live up to how I remembered it.
The Doubler Decker wrapper is quite bright and eye catching, the main colours are bright orange and purple. The front of the wrapper has a purple strip running along the top of it, this has the Cadbury logo written in it in purple and white, the bottom half of the wrapper is bright orange. The words "Double Decker" are written in large chunky white letters which are positioned so that they go across both the orange and purple section. On one side of the wrapper is a purple strip with a sentence about the chocolate bar written inside it in white writing, and along the opposite side are the words "Soft on top with a crispy bottom" again this is written in white. The back of the packet it totally orange and contains information such as the ingredients, allergy warnings, and nutritional information, this is written in very small black writing.
The Chocolate Bar
The chocolate bar itself, when I unwrapped it looked just as I remembered it, a very chunky and thick bar of chocolate with a ripple effect along the top of it. The Double Decker is basically a solid crunchy cereal bottom, it reminds me a bit of rice crispy type pieces set in very thick chocolate, sat on top of this is a thick layer of nougat, the entire thing is then covered in a layer of Cadburys milk chocolate. The bar itself is quite large compared to other chocolate bars I have eaten, I think this is due to the thickness of it made up from the 2 layers of chocolate and nougat , in length the bar is pretty much standard.
Price and Availability
As I have mentioned I purchased my single bar of Cadbury Double Decker from Boots and it cost me just under 70p, however this chocolate bar is widely available and can be brought in most supermarkets, convenience stores, vending machines and so on, the price really does vary depending on the shop you are buying it from, personally I think that around 70p is standard from what I have seen in other shops so I think Boots had this item fairly priced in comparison. You can also buy Double Deckers in larger multi packs which are available in most supermarkets, personally I find that buying these types of chocolate bars in this way works out cheaper than buying them individually.
The following information is per 60g bar of chocolate bar
* Calories - 275
* Sugars - 32.9g
* Fat - 11.1
* Saturates - 6.0g
* Salt - 0.15g
As you can see this is not the healthy option to choose when picking a chocolate bar, in my option it is quite high in calories as well as sugars and fat. This is not a chocolate bar I would have on a daily basis, as a bit of a treat when out and in my case for medical reasons I do not mind treating myself but this is certainly not what I would consider part of a healthy balanced diet.
These warnings are clearly printed on the back of the packet so if you do have any food allergies it is easy to see whether this chocolate bar would be suitable, they include information that this product contains
* May contain Peanuts
* May contain nuts
All of this information is clearly written in black writing inside a bright yellow oval making it stand out from the rest of the information on the back of the wrapper.
A Double Decker is definitely a chocolate bar that I would recommend, personally I love the combination of the crunchy crispy bottom part of the bar and the chewy soft nougat on top, as I child I remember trying to separate the 2 layers and eating them separately, however this is not possible to do when out. The chocolate bar is very sweet especially with the nougat layer but not what I would call sickly sweet, the combination of ingredients is perfect in my view. If I had any criticism about a Double Decker it would be the calorie and fat content, it is not the healthiest chocolate bar, but I did really enjoy eating it at the time. I would definitely have a Double Decker again as a treat but this is not something I would eat on a regular basis.
