Guylian Chocolate Sea Shells
Advantages: Rich Taste, Good Value, Nicely Packaged and Yummy!
I received a small 65g box of these chocolates as a 'Thank you' present from a friend. I am a praline fiend and would have all my chocolate indulgences be made of praline if it was at all possible so I feel I am qualified enough to judge the quality of these enchanting Belgian chocolate sea shells and I owe it to you, the dooyoo public to fully research these delightfully boxed chocolate marvels.
Price and Availability
Guylian is a brand synonymous with the production of Belgian chocolate sea shells and so these chocolates are priced accordingly. A 65g miniature box containing 6 chocolate shells retails at around £1.00 whereas a larger 250g box will set you back around £4.00. These aren't the unknown brand, £1 a box, chocolates from discount stores nor are they the expensive pralines found at Thornton's or Hotel Chocolat. They are a reasonable price for a well known brand and I would say they are an ideal gift chocolate, renowned but affordable. Guylian chocolate sea shells are widely available from supermarkets, discount stores and even corner shops. I don't imagine they would be difficult to come across in your local area.
My 65g box of chocolates came in a white box with a transparent aperture at the front allowing me to see the wonderful bounty what lay inside, this created an instant impression. The product looked nice and I knew that the pretty box wasn't hiding some hideous chocolates inside, a nice touch if purchasing for a gift. The box had the Guylian brand written on all four sides and again on the top, all instances of the name are embossed in a metallic gold and adding that little hint of quality to the product. There was a mock ribbon and bow on the top right corner of the box, reinforcing the idea that this product makes a great gift. The box contained all the information you would need in regards to a food product i.e ingredients, cautions, storage instructions etc. and on the front of the box was a glossy brown picture of the signature seahorse chocolate, overall a very enticing product. The box was easy to open and the chocolates easy to slide out. The chocolates are supplied in a dark brown plastic tray which isn't great for the environment but I like that the smallest of boxes has been given the same consideration as the larger boxes, it makes those 6 chocolates seem much more indulgent.
The chocolates themselves are divine, as I have said I do love praline and the quality of these chocolates for the price is great. I have a nasty habit of buying cheap chocolate and although I enjoy the taste of cheap pralines I find they are very 'gritty' in texture and I can feel the sugar content in them. This does not happen with these chocolates, the praline in these is as smooth as a chocolate river. They are rich as opposed to sweet and have a deep 'nutty' taste. The shells are also rather large in size, larger than the average chocolate sea shell and are deeply filled. They come in a range of Seashell shapes, including the signature Seahorse. The silky praline is coated in a thin layer of glossy, marbled, Belgian chocolate and is a joy to eat. They are satisfying but in a rich rather than sugary way and I find one to two shells is enough to sedate my sweet craving and I have a notorious sweet tooth.
Overall I would recommend Guylian Belgian chocolate sea shells to anyone who likes praline. They are a quality product that I wouldn't hesitate to give as a gift and the availability of sizes means that you can give them as the main present or as a 'stocking filler/little bit of something'. A nicely packaged, yummy box of treats to share or, more likely, to keep to myself!.
Summary: A stunning selection of Belgian chocolate seashells.
