A bar for lovers of sweet non-milky chocolate

I have visited a couple of good independent sweetshops recently, both of which stock a good range of American and other imported chocolate bars and sweets. I like to try different confectionary so I decided to buy a few to sample - not all at once I may add! My eyes lit up when I saw an Hershey brand chocolate bar called "Cookies"n"chocolate", as it seems to be made from two of my favourite things! It is a milk chocolate bar dotted with chocolate cookie chips.

Like all imported bars, this costs more than most chocolates - I paid £1.15 for 40g. I have also paid around the same price, for a different variety, in branches of the Mr Timms Old Fashioned Sweetshop chain. I have since seen other Hershey bars in my local Londis, where they cost only 75p for the same size so it is worth shopping around. It is also available from various online suppliers, but I do not have personal experience of any of those stockists.

These bars are thin and wide, like most of the Hershey brand ones. I think chunkier bas are more satisfying, espcecially if they are flavoured as you get more filling in each bite, but I can live with thinner ones. The chocolate is marked out in squares but you can't actually use the lines to break the bar up. If you try to, it just falls apart. Apart from that it looks appetising, with a strongly cocoa butter like smell which is lovely.

For those of you that don't know, Hersheys are are a major sweet manufacturer in the U.S.A. They produce lots of different chocolate bars, some under the Reese branding. I have tried quite a few now, and they mostly don't live up to my expectations for one reason - the chocolate is different from what we are used to here. I like my milk chocolate to be milky tasting, but I find that American chocolate isn't. This Hershey bar is no different. The chocolate is bland and sweet, without that kind of delicious creaminess you get in a Galaxy or Dairy Milk. I find it quite sickly after having ate a few pieces. This is a shame because I really like the cookie pieces. They taste like the biscuits that are used to make Oreos, rich and chocolatey. They are crispy but not hard. There is plenty of them, well distributed throughout. The contrasting textures of the biscuit pieces and the smooth, soft chocolate is lovely. I just don't find the chocolate itself at all moreish!

My bar does not come a nutrition table, although I noticed that it contains hydrogenated palm oil amongst the ingredients. This, and the fact is obviously made of chocolate and sugar, makes me suspect it is not one of the lowest fat chocolate bars around. I like to have chocolate as an occasional basis as a treat, so I want it to taste really good when I do indulge. This bar is too sickly and not chocolatey enough in flavour to me. I wouldn't recommend it to lovers of really milky chocolate, but if you like a sweeter kind, this may appeal to you. The cookie pieces are nice at least!

An average chocolate bar that is overly sweet

The Cookies 'n' Chocolate bar is made by American chocolate manufacturer Hershey's, and is part of the standard bar range. You can get hold of these easily in the United States and where Hershey's is a giant brand name. You can import order these chocolate bars, or if you are lucky you may find that your local supermarket stocks them. For a while the Aldi's near me was stocking a range of Hershey's bars in different flavours. I ordered my Cookies 'n' Chocolate bar online from www.americansweets.co.uk, where I paid the rather inflated price of 89p for a 40g bar. The higher price is due to all of their items being imported and sourced directly from the United States.

The packaging is simplistic and heavily branded with a large Hershey's logo across the front. It has a rich brown colour as the background so that you can easily tell it apart from the other flavours in the range. Each bar weighs in at 40g. Inside, the bar is very thin compared to what you might normally expect from an English chocolate bar, and it mirrors the outer packaging with the Hershey's logo moulded across the top of the chocolate bar. Unusually, there were no pre-formed rows to break the chocolate off into segments, so you just bite straight into it or snap a piece off which can make a bit of a mess.

The chocolate itself forms the base of the bar and is a nice ordinary milk chocolate flavour. I though that it didn't taste too harsh or synthetic as you might expect from an American chocolate. It's lighter and less creamy than UK chocolate, but it melts easily and has a nice contrasting texture against the biscuit pieces. The bits of crumbled cookies are mixed in throughout the bar and give the bar a nice crunchy bite to it. The main issue I had was that the chocolate bar was just so sweet, and it was impossible to pick out any taste of the cookies as the chocolate flavour just overpowered everything else. Aside from the crunchy texture I may as well have been eating an ordinary chocolate bar as I could not identify the cookie flavour. From the image on the front of the wrapper it appears that the cookies are the dark American style cookies that are just chocolate flavoured, and not like an ordinary chocolate chip cookie which has a plain base with only a small hint of chocolate from the chips. Overall this tastes very sugary and you will need to have quite the sweet tooth to really appreciate it.

This chocolate bar seems quite small and doesn't satisfy any hunger cravings. I preferred to have small bits of it as a taster rather than eat the whole thing in one go as a snack, as this still left me feeling hungry afterwards anyway. After checking the packaging I could not find any nutritional values listed, so I think it is probably safe to say that these are quite far along the unhealthy scale!

I think this is ok if you like sugary sweet chocolate, although I personally found it a bit too sickly for my taste and that's saying something as I have a mega sweet tooth! I would recommend trying the Galaxy Cookie bar instead which has a more rounded flavour and is much easier to get hold of.

I am a lover of chocolate, and I really love American chocolate. Hersheys is a big brand in America and some of their yummy goodness is available easily over here. I have tried many of their bars, and I am in love with the Hershey's Cookies and Chocolate Bar.

It combines my favorite American chocolate, Hersheys, with my favorite American cookie, Oreos, in a yummy, crumbly yet smooth and soft chocolate bar that just melts in your mouth. The chocolate is milk chocolate, and the bar is much thinner than English chocolate bars, but is wider. You get a 40 gram bar, and the chocolate has the word Hershey pressed onto each rectangular piece of the bar.

The pieces are easy to break off, so you can always get a good piece to pop into your mouth. There is 9 pieces on a bar altogether and I find that this is the perfect amount of chocolate. The chocolate is creamy, and smooth, and has a lovely thick taste to it. The Oreo pieces in the chocolate are very small pieces, and they are thick, and perfectly crunchy to add a nice crunch to the chocolate.

The chocolate comes in a silky brown coloured wrapper, which has a swirly pattern like a chocolate mix printed onto the packet. The nutritional information is all printed on the back of the bar so you can easily see what is in the chocolate and what it means for your body when you eat it.

It is not a widely findable chocolate bar, but you can buy these in Sweet Stores around the country and also from www.AmericanSweets.co.uk or if you live in or near Aldershot in Hampshire, there is an American Candy Store, which sells these among a wide range of other American foods and candy. A bar will usually cost you around 90p, which may seem like a lot, but personally I feel this is totally worth it.

You can also buy these on Amazon, but unless you are buying them in bulk, it can be a bit expensive to buy them this way, especially when you add in the costs of having the chocolate delivered to you.
Obviously, being chocolate, this bar contains a lot of fat, calories and sugar, so it should be enjoyed in moderation, even though it does taste so good I could just eat it every day. I give this bar a 5 out of 5, and if you have had not had the chance to eat one of these yet, I totally recommend it, it is a wonderful chocolate bar.

        Disadvantages

There's a reason you don't see it much over here - we have better.

I had a vague memory of trying Hershey's on a holiday in the states many years ago and remember being not over struck with it. For those unfamiliar with Hershey's, they are a huge American brand of chocolate, think Cadbury- popular. (In fact Hershey distribute Cadbury's products in the US) It's unusual to find many Hershey products over here, the 'Reeces' items being the most common, but whilst in a rather upmarket corner shop today, I spotted Hershey's 'Cookie 'n' Chocolate bar, and thought I'd give the brand another go.

The 40g bar is rectangular and very thin, not like our chunky chocolate, more milky bar thickness. The wrapper is brown with the iconic Hershey's logo boldly on the front. Much like an original Hershey bar but with the addition of 'Cookies 'n' Chocolate' fairly discretely underneath, reminded me very much of how Galaxy have only slightly changed their design for their new cookie flavour. Whilst being a good thing and remaining true to the brand 'look', would anyone notice this was different from an original Hershey bar without looking very closely? Not sure. I guess in the UK seeing a Hershey bar of any description is going the stand out from the rest as they aren't stocked very widely.

Breaking some off, I notice the chocolate is a lot softer than that of say Cadbury's, and wasn't easy to break along the ridges into individual chunks, it just kind of broke where it felt like! The taste was sweet, a little chocolatey, but honestly not very and a little buttery with a very artificial after taste. The crunch of the little pieces of biscuit broke the richness up and the biscuit was actually very tasty. The chocolate itself I don't rate. Looking at the pack I can see it only contains 13% cocoa which explains the lack of chocolate flavour.

I know that the bars we eat are not considered true chocolate by the experts due to the high amount of milk, fat and sugar against actual cocoa content. However at least most of them have a chocolate flavour, even if they are essentially candy. With Hershey's I can barely taste the chocolate through the sweet creamy butteryness. I suppose at least the Americans call them 'Candy' bars - they're not pretending they're anything else!

I guess if you have a craving for something sweet, this bar would satisfy it but if you are a true choccie lover, this will disappoint.

There is no calorie information on the packaging so I cannot comment on exactly what effect this will have on your waistline in comparison to other bars, but needless to say these things aren't good for you.

As far as price goes I think I paid around 60p for this, you will pay extra for the rarity factor, but really it's not worth it.
