Advantages: Delicious moist and fantastic value for money.
Disadvantages: None except being chocolate it is high in fat.
I couldn't believe my eyes in Marks and Spencer the other day. I have to admit that I rarely visit the store these days as I think a lot of it is expensive, and with the ready made meals dominating the shelves I prefer to make meals from scratch, so this store isn't my first port of call anymore.
However I went in the other day as one of my Persians has a love of their cat food, and so I pop in sometimes to get her a treat. By the sandwich section I spied a light blue wrapper and noticed the picture of a bar which very closely resembled a Bounty, and underneath the amazing price of 20P-now that is a bargain- so into my basket it went.
The first thing I did was the check the competition. Bounty single bars in Tesco for 57g are 46p so they are twice the cost and only slightly larger! The Marks one is 50g. A small note I do prefer the dark ones but never say no to milk ones, so the price was good, and the bar was tempting-all I had to do was to sit and indulge!
First of all I had better talk calories. The bar contains 242 calories and like Bounties they have two little pieces so for just over 100 calories you could have a tasty little pick me up. The bars also have 13.5 g fat for the two of which saturates are 7.5 so better munch with caution here. Bounty Bars are almost the same- so no difference there.
Ingredients are:
Sugar, dessicated coconut, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, dried whole milk, cocoa mass, lactose, salt, emulsifier, soya lecithin, milk protein, and natural flavouring.
So to the most important aspect the eating!
I took my first bite and I have to say I thought these were much moister, fresher and had a stronger coconut taste than Bounty Bars. The white coconut filling looked like little chunks of snowy granules of coconut, and the chocolate was a milky and thick, and utterly delicious casing for the filling. It was a real challenge not to eat both bars, but I resisted and halved the last piece to get some more pooling of resources from hubby and son. They agreed with me, it was nicer than Bounty in all aspects, it tasted fresh and as if it had only just left the factory. Maybe the coconut was newly picked from a palm somewhere tropical, but it was amazing.
So for me on price, taste, value for money, and freshness you can't fault it. It's a high class product for a low price, and I am going to stock up next time I go there.
The bar is vegetarian and it does contain cow's milk, so is not suitable for anyone with lactose intolerance or who is vegan. They are actually made in Germany so I think we can thank them for creating this superb bar.
I like these stored in the fridge as they firm up well, and the chocolate tastes really lovely if you do this but there is no need to!
I recently wrote about a lovely coconut bar made by Oskri which I really love as this is pure coconut -I called that review "Mutiny from the Bounty" but having tasted this I think M&S have really created a bar which is going to have a massive impact on the sales of Bounty Bars if they keep offering it at this price and at this quality.
I think these are a bargain and I am sure it won't be long before there is "mutiny from the Bounty" with these!
Summary: A real find-a treasure infact and a credit crunch lunch!
