A tasty chocolate treat that I love

As I was at work yesterday evening so many aggravating little things just kept happening. To the point I just wanted to walk out, being a lone worker that really isn't possible unless I want to lose my job! So hello Mr vending machine!!

      Galaxy Minstrels:

'Smooth and creamy Galaxy chocolate captured in crispy shells. Why have cotton when you can have silk?'

      My Findings:

Well I have totally given into the chocolate fix, but what can I say after all with the stresses of work my body was screaming chocolate! Or slap a guest but that really isn't a good idea so chocolate I went for. Browsing the vending machine at work I opted for the Galaxy Minstrels, I've had these many times in past so I knew I liked them.

In the 42g bag you get around fifteen minstrels, not the biggest of chocolate being a slight bit bigger than a five pence piece. But even though they are small they give you a mighty sweet yummy chocolate kick. Which everyone needs from time to time.

They have a crisp shell then a gorgeous chocolate centre, I really could eat several packs at once if I'm honest! This is a sweet milk chocolate but not like Cadbury at all which I guess is there main competitor. The chocolate is very sweet but I really like sweetness so this is a plus for me. However I can see this being too sweet for some.

For me I like to sucks on them so that chocolate sensation lingers that bit longer, to blast me off to that happy place. If I had to pick Cadbury or Galaxy, personally Galaxy for the win. These are suitable for vegetarians

These little sexy beauties come in small or large bags, mine from the machine tonight sadly was the small bag. Very easy to open you just rip the side of the pack. I like the packaging look Galaxy stick with is lovely shades of chocolate.

When you open up the package the chocolate sent you don't really detect, unless you put your nose in the bag. But though they don't have much fragrance to them, they are packed with chocolate flavour. I'm really having my chocolate fix!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Great fairly unique product

Ministrels are and always have been one of my favourite sweets/chocolates. I think they have the best of both worlds, with a crisp outer shell and smooth galaxy chocolate inside. The balance means that they don't feel as rich or too sweet like some other chocolate brands, and you can easily find yourself dipping into the packet over and over without even realising. The shell also keeps them preserved for a little longer as unlike some other chocolates, when its a little hot you don't fin they have all melted into one big chocolate lump when you open up the bag.

Minstrels come in a small one person serving packet and also a larger for sharing one. I tend to buy the larger as I can share them out with my boyfriend (if he's lucky!) and reseal it when I don't feel like finishing them off in one sitting. These are often on sale at big supermarkets in a 2 for *insert price* deal and so I like to get them when I can as I feel it is a good saving on a nice treat. A smaller packet is usually around 60-80p depending on where you buy which is about standard for most sweets and chocolates now. A larger bag can be anywhere from £1.50-2.50 and though the larger end of the scale is definitely expensive for a bag of little chocolates, I think its worth it simply because of the taste. In addition, this is within the typical range for chocolates now and so is what you have to expect when you buy branded ones.

Minstrels, I find, are one of the few chocolate brands that just cannot be matched by their non-branded copies. The only way to get that great taste is to buy Galaxy Minstrels. They have a more-ish quality about them that makes it difficult to pick up and then put down without finishing the packet, although I'm not complaining as they definitely are one of my favourite treats.

Overall I would definitely recommend Galaxy Minstrels. They have a very distinctive taste that keeps me coming back for them. The concept is quite simple which I like also, and they haven't tried to come out with lots of brash new flavours, instead simply relying on that taste. The price is quite a lot, but like I said this is to be expected now from most branded chocolates, and so I can make an exception on price when splashing out on a treat.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A decent cost effective sweet which is a little lacking in smoothness for my taste

          Galaxy Minstrels

          Packaging

The pack is light brown with a picture of 4 minstrels on the front with dark brown writing on the front. It is nothing remarkable but does let the consumer know it is a galaxy product.

          Taste and texture

The sweets have a dark chocolate outer shell with a smooth milk chocolate inner shell, the outer coating does not much have much of a flavour to it, the inner shell is nice and sweet and quite milky but not quite up to the standard of galaxy chocolate bars or even dairy milk chocolate. The outer shell is quite crispy rather than soft and smooth and thus the sweet is quite crunchy. I find this gets in the way of the smoothness of the product and is not much to my liking, it's still quite a nice sweet to eat but not as nice as it could be if it were less crunchy and more smooth.

          Health

Each Pack is 42 grams and per 100 grams contains 503 kcal, 5g of protein, 70 g of Carbohydrates and 22 grams of fat thus per bag you have nearly 2.5 grams of protein (a good amount) 35g of carbs (not particularly worrisome) and 11g of fat which is very high thus this snack is quite fattening for your health and therefore needs to be consumed as part of an regularly active lifestyle and balanced diet. Irritatingly the product does not break down the fat content into saturated fats (unhealthy type) and unsaturated fats (the healthy type) so this is a slight negative in terms of the consumer's ability to formulate a balanced diet with the right kinds of fat in it.

          Cost

In my local store they are about 62 pence which is about typical this is quite good considering that 42 grams is about the same chocolate as the similar bars of chocolate which are about 69p in my local shop so is a cost effective product albeit for me I would buy the other sweet as the crunchy aspect does not appeal to me.

          Summary

A sweet tasting snack that is fairly good value for money but whose taste is good but not great, if you prefer crunchy sweets this will be a good buy however if like me you generally prefer smoother products I would stick to something more silky and creamier like the galaxy chocolate bar or the galaxy counters product.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Gorgeous sweets from the Galaxy brand that I would recommend!

Any regular readers of my reviews will be aware by now that I am something of a chocoholic, have an immense sweet tooth, and regularly enjoy indulging my "addictions" by way of chomping merrily on a variety of chocolates and sweets. I would go so far as to say it is my favourite hobby, in fact.

Anyway, one chocolate treat that I always enjoy is from the well-known "Galaxy" brand, namely the Galaxy Minstrels. I often find myself hunting for the recognisable brown coloured bag when I am shopping, and they are a favourite of both myself and my husband if we are going to the cinema, so it is fair to say that I purchase the sweets quite regularly.

In case you are unfamiliar with this particular treat, Minstrels are basically round-shaped sweets that are fairly flat in appearance. They are a dark brown colour, thanks to the crispy chocolate shell that covers the smooth chocolate interior so well. Whilst I normally favour treats and chocolate bars from the "Cadbury's" range, I find that the Galaxy Minstrels really offer something a bit different from the norm.

Firstly, their outer coating is so delightfully crisp that it offers such a satisfying 'bite' to the chocolate sweets. Without being overly hard that it makes the sweets seem difficult to crunch, the crispy coating on the Minstrels adds a pleasant texture to the sweets and makes them quite satisfying to eat.

Secondly, the creamy Galaxy milk chocolate contained within the crispy shells is so deliciously smooth that it 'counteracts' the crunchy, crispy outer 'shell' and adds the perfect balance in terms of the overall texture of the sweets. The end result is a perfect combination of crunchy and smooth, and this makes for a very enjoyable crunchy chocolate sweet, in my opinion.

As I touched on earlier, I usually prefer other brands of chocolate over the Galaxy brand as I often find Galaxy chocolate can be quite sickly and a little over-sweet (even for me!) In the case of the Minstrels however, I find that the chocolate contained within is balanced out a little, thanks to the crispy shell coating. The chocolate is still quite sweet as you would expect, but it doesn't seem to be as sickly as when eating a bar of Galaxy chocolate. I can only put this down to the crispy shells on the outside of the Minstrels providing a bit of a balance to the sweets overall.

The chocolate is of a very high quality, as I have come to expect with products in the Galaxy range. I have never found that any of the Minstrels are imperfect in any way, nor have I found that the chocolate has a sickly - or bitter - aftertaste to it. The chocolate is deliciously creamy, although this is only evident if the outer crispy shell has been sucked off the exterior of the sweets! Otherwise, the texture of the chocolate tends to go unnoticed. The taste is simply divine; very rich, delicious and creamy and of course, extremely sweet.

The nutritional information on the packaging is of course not going to deliver the best news for those of you who are watching your waistline or your calorie intake. I can see that 100g of the sweets will provide: 503 kcal and 22.2g fat. Ahem...! The good news is that they are suitable for a vegetarian diet.

Galaxy Minstrels are widely available in all good supermarkets, newsagents and grocery stores. There are various sizes of bags available, such as an 'individual' bag which generally costs around 65 - 75 pence. The "Treat Bag" is 105g in size and is usually priced at around £1.10, this being the bag that I purchase most often for my husband and myself to share...(sometimes..!!) There is also a larger "Sharer" bag - being 170g in size, which I believe is currently on a special promotional price of only £1 in branches of Asda. (Info correct as @ February/March 2012).

Overall, I absolutely love the Galaxy Minstrels and will continue to buy them for myself and my husband to enjoy. I wholeheartedly recommend giving them a try out if you haven't tried them before... delicious!

              Disadvantages

              A real treat!

It's not that often that I buy Galaxy Minstrels. I had almost forgotten how nice they are! I usually buy the larger packets of similar chocolate sweets when they are on special offer which doesn't seem to be all that often lately unfortunately. However I thought I would treat myself when I recently spotted these in the supermarket whilst out shopping.
I never buy one person packets of sweets any more as they are far too expensive. Anyway, on to the Minstrels. Minstrels are round shaped traditional Galaxy milk Chocolate covered in a crispy shell. When you bite into each chocolate you can taste the smooth chocolate and this combined with the crunchy shell really tastes delicious. I really like the unique taste of smooth Galaxy chocolate and these Minstrels do not last long in my house. They are incredibly Moorish and you cannot help but eat one after the other.
The bags I would buy are 170g in weight. These sixe bags cost around £1.70 which is way too pricey in my view; its best to look out for when they are on offer when they may be available at a £1 per bag if you are lucky!

Minstrels are a great chocolate treat, due to the high price only i'm awarding them 4 Dooyoo stars; otherwise it would be 5.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                Amazingly good tasting chocolate sweets!

Minstrels are my absolute favourite sweets. I find I usually can't open a packet without eating all the minstrels in it.

They come in an easy-to-open plastic packet. The bigger packs usually have a piece of sticky tape so you can reseal them. First of all when you open the packet, you get this wonderful smell of chocolate. I am by no means a big chocolate fan, but this smells just gets me excited every time. The sweets themselves, are kind of circle buttons, about 0.5 centimetres thick. They are coated in a lovely chocolaty coating, which tastes absolutely amazing. Underneath this is a nice sweet and creamy milk chocolate. It is sweeter than regular milk chocolate and this is probably why I like it more. I often just let the minstrels melt on my tongue as it means the taste stays there for longer.

One thing to consider is the price. I find them quite expensive (I usually buy the 290g pack and it is around £2.70). This doesn't put me off though, as they just taste amazing. If you haven't tried them before, even if you're not a great fan of chocolate, go ahead and try them because they just seem to be in a league of their own. If they are on special offer, they're a must-have. Definitely recommend them!

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

                  Galaxy offer something different

Galaxy chocolate is a popular brand amongst many people, one reason being because it is so creamy and smooth. It is a great treat to eat a slab of the milk chocolate after it has been chilled in the fridge but another tasty offering from the brand is their Minstrels. These are small disc shaped chocolates about the size of a one pence coin but obviously thicker. They consist of the famous smooth milk chocolate coated in a crispy shell. The consistency of the chocolate centre with the crisp shell makes these ever so tasty and enjoyable to eat and the two components complement each other extremely well.

This kind of sweet or chocolate is ideal for sharing with friends at a gathering where maybe you watch a DVD together and you put them on a table where everyone can keep taking a few at a time or can be poured in to serving bowl similarly to Maltesers or some type of Haribo. Ideally for these occasions you can purchase larger pouches but if you just want a bag for yourself you can buy a standard smaller sized one which equates to 42g. These are roughly priced between 50 and 60 pence, in fact they are currently 54 pence on the Tesco website.

A 42g bag contains 212 calories and 9.2g of fat which seems at first glance no worse than a lot of other sweets and chocolates and enjoyed as a treat and in moderation would in my opinion be fine.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Only 2 stars from me as they are so expensive with so few in a packet!

I am a huge chocoholic but have had to limit my intake since I became pregnant. Today though, I took a real notion for a packet of Minstrels and just had to have them! Minstrels are made by Galaxy which has got to be my favourite chocolate as it is usually so creamy and gorgeous!

When I bought a small packet of these, they cost me a ridiculous 68p! I couldnt believe how expensive they were but I bought them in a small local garage. You may be able to get them cheaper if you shop around in the supermarkets.

Minstrels are small like circular chocolates that have a crisp outer chocolate shell and a smooth chocolate inside. When I opened my packet today, I was really disappointed as there were hardly any chocolates in the packet so I felt a little bit ripped off.

When I tasted the Minstrels, they were really moreish and the chocolate was very rich and lovely and creamy. I loved the taste of them but I had to really savour each one as the amount in the packet was really miserable and not really worth the money. I think from now on I will go for the bigger family sized packets as they would probably work out a lot better value for money.

Minstrels are quite calorific and fattening so they are best to be eaten in moderation. I would recommend them but only in the larger better value packets if you can get a good deal on them in the supermarket.

Gosh Gosh Gosh, Yum Yum Yum....

Ok. So, first off, let me say one word...
                    ~~ YUM ~~
Oh my gosh, these smooth galaxy chocolate buttons, coated in a crispy chocolate - flavoured shell are just PERFECT for anybody. Full- time chocoholic or not! Galaxy is one of my favourite companies, along with Cadbury's of course! So let me tell you why I love these Galaxy Mistrels!...

The taste is simply divine! Im eating a packet as I write this;)
And here's how I would describe my experience...
As soon as I bite into that crispy shell, the tase comes bounding out at me. I come straight into the smooth, silky chocolate and it's everything you'd want chocolate to tase like. AMAZING. When I crunch through the oval - shaped chocolate snack, and it's all gone, I instantly want another one! But, I can't . I'm doing a review!

The after-taste is sensational. It leaves you with that just rich enough - Not too heavy/ sickly! - tase you dream about. I cannot put it any simpler.
They are gorgeous. If you haven't tried them, go buy a packet;)

                    Silky smooth chocolate

This chocolate claims to be smooth and creamy chocolate captured in crispy shells, and this is exactly what it is. This is one of my favourite chocolates, they just melt in your mouth. Only problem is there isn't enough in a 42g bag. I just can't seem to stop eating them. Don't do much for the diet! The chocolate is silky on the tongue and very very creamy in taste and texture.

A 42g had approximately 20 sweets. with 500 calories per 100 gram. they are not sickly like some chocolates and many people who don't like much chocolate can't resist these.

Not a chocolate to give the kids when they come around, very much an adult chocolate. They are quite pricey for a bag and can cost upto 70pence in some places.

They are available in larger bags if this size is not enough. You will soon be wanting another bag!

                      Disadvantages

                      Great chocolate snack

I am not a massive chocolate fan. I occasionally like the odd bit of chocolate but nothing too rich or sickly Galaxy has always been a good reliable brand that you can always trust to fulfil any chocolate cravings. Minstrels are saucer shaped bits of milk chocolate coated with a crunchy sugar coating. Its is almost like a giant M&M. One minstrel is about the size of a 20p coin.

I always like to savour chocolate so tend to such the minstrel until the shell has disappeared. Once the shell has gone you are left with the nice soft inner chocolate which tastes good quality but not over the top or too rich.

A standard pack is about 42g and you get a fair few minstrels in the pack. They are priced between 50p and 80p depending where you go. However I recommend getting a grab bag size packet. Currently they are 2 for £2.50 and contain around 4 packets worth in one bag. The best thing about this is once you have 2 bags (can mix and match with other sweets) you get a code for a free rental at blockbuster. Considering that rental cost around £4.50 it's a great deal.

Each 42g bag of sweets is around 211 calories which is not too bad.

Minstrels are defiantly one of my favourite sweets and I highly recommend them.

                      Advantages

                      Disadvantages

                      a nice snack

                      Time for another chocolate review!

                      ~~The chocolate~~

Galaxy minstrels are simply soft galaxy chocolate buttons encased in a hard chocolate shell. The minstrels are quite wide and pretty big; I'd say there's more in them than maltesers. So, onto the most important bit, the taste test!
The shell, is wonderfully crunchy against the soft centre, though there is very little flavor to it. The middle's where that lies, as soon as it touches your tongue, it melts into a smooth galaxy taste. Creamy, sweet and so delicious. Very moreish!

                      ~~ Ingredients and nutrition ~~

Ingredients: sugar, cocoa butter, skimmed milk powder, cocoa mass, lactose, vegetable fat, whey powder, milk fat, soya lechthin, curcumin, beetroot, starch, vegetable oil, natural vanilla extract.

In a 100g bag there is:

                      2108 kJ Energy
                      503 Kcal
                      5.2g Protein
                      70.2g Carbohydrate
                      22.3g Fat
                      They are suitable for vegetarians.

                      ~~Price and availability~~

A 42g standard bag will cost between 40-55p, and you can buy them from most sweet shops.
A 170g pouch is £1.73 and again, available from most sweet shops.

The largest, pack, 290g, is £2.70and are available in most super markets and some large sweet shops.

                      ~~Conclusion~~

Minstrels are another nice treat from galaxy, but definitely not an everyday one!

                        Advantages

                        Disadvantages

                        A delicious occasional treat

Mars Galaxy Minstrels are a chocolate based snack, consisting of disc shaped galaxy milk chocolate in a crisp sugar shell. They have been available for many years and are sold around the world by Mars (one of the leading confectionary manufacturers). As well as the standard 42 gram bag, a 170 gram bag and 290 gram pouch are also available. Expect to pay around 50p for 42 grams and £2.50 for a large pouch.

Galaxy minstrels packaging is distinctive: coloured chocolate brown with galaxy minstrels written across the top and a picture of the individual chocolates. They should be kept in a cool dark place and will keep for several months. One of the major advantages and selling points of minstrels is that they do not melt in hot weather (or when grasped tightly by a child) so do not need to be kept in the fridge in the summer.

A standard 42 gram bag contains 211 calories, 9.4 grams of fat and over 29 grams of carbohydrates. Given 42 grams is not a large bag it is clear these are a high calorie food and not particularly good for you. However, as an occasional treat they are fine.

Galaxy minstrels are one of my favourite 'naughty' treats - the crisp sugar shell is great to bite through or nibble off, and adds texture, while the galaxy chocolate underneath is, as you would expect, rich, creamy, smooth and very sweet. Definitely one for the trolley!

                          Advantages

                          Disadvantages

                          An old classic

Galaxy seem to have brought out a few new variations of their fab chocolate bars recently but to be honest I haven't really been blown away by any of them. I think the charm and attraction of Galaxy chocolate is it's fantastic flavour and texture and it is best enjoyed in it's simplest form. I just feel that messing with it too much just detracts from it's charms.

After tasting a few disappointments I recently decided to treat myself to a bag of Minstrels. This is one chocolate treat where I think Galaxy have got it absolutely right. I picked up a small 42g bag of these Minstrels for 49p during my quick Tesco shop and was determined to enjoy them with a nice cup of coffee later in the day.

When I had parked my tired girls in front of a Disney film later that day, I sat down with my cuppa and opened the little brown bag. These little chocolates tasted exactly as I had remembered, a layer of crisp shell over the delightful creamy and luxurious Galaxy milk chocolate.

The crispy shell just complements the milk chocolate fantastically and the contrast between the different textures makes them thoroughly enjoyable. They are really moreish and I polished them off in record time savouring each little chocolate. A bag doesn't seem quite enough though, I reached the end very quickly and was left feeling a little cheated as I hadn't realised the empty bag was coming quite so soon. Nevermind... next time I'll just buy a bigger bag.

These chocolates really are an old classic and I doubt anyone could fail to enjoy a packet of these simple chocolates. My faith has been restored in Galaxy chocolate and from now on I think I will just stick to what I know and love.

                            Advantages

                            Disadvantages

                            A great chocolate product

These are a personal favourite of mine and beat similar chocolate products from other leading brands hands down. The first advantage is that you get the rich, creamy almost decadent texture of Galaxy chocolate, albeit in a different format. The crisp chocolate shell round the outside gives a real contrast in textures, which adds greatly to the taste sensation. One distinct advantage Minstrels have over other Galaxy chocolate products is that the crisp chocolate shell prevents the inner chocolate from melting whatever the weather. Whilst it is great that Minstrels are available in standard and larger bags (meant for sharing), I think that the introduction of a king sized bag would be a great marketing idea as the serving size is slightly on the small side. Furthermore, I think that smaller bags (as are available for comparable chocolate products) would sell well. In summary, a great chocolate product which can be enjoyed equally in summer or winter.
