Revels - Best medicine for PMT
Revel............Celebrate, have fun, whoop it up, paint the town red, hang loose and groove man!!!!
Once a month ladies I do exactly that, there seems to be this overwhelming urge to dive into the biggest bag of revels and truly let my hair down. Weird I know but every 28 days or so this private party is a must, or else!!!!
It always seems to be around 8pm when my husband settles down in front of the TV when I flutter my eyelashes and tell him that I NEED revels. Bless him of he pops to Tesco, no questions asked and arrives home with the biggest bag he can find. I love him so much xx
What is it about these sweeties that allow me to chill and come back down to earth?
Revels are simply milk chocolate coated sweeties produced by Galaxy Mars with 6 assorted centres. At present the centres are orange cream, coffee cream, toffee, raisin, honeycomb and a milk chocolate disc. Nothing amazing added to facilitate my craving but they work and allow me to cope with each monthly curse far better than evening primrose oil ever did.
It's always exciting opening a bag of revels because you are never sure what you are popping into your mouth, you can guess and sometimes I guess right but most of the time it is a huge surprise. Ha you thought I was toffee but I am a raisin!! The chocolate disc however is a bit of a give away it looks like a minstrel without the coating so can never be mistaken for anything else.
I love all the flavours, which is a bonus. The chocolate disc is what it says lovely creamy, milk chocolate sweet and satisfying which melts on your tongue. The toffee is hard so be careful on your teeth don't try and bite through a revel just in case it is a toffee. The toffee itself is delicious, reminds me of a curly wurly.
When I was little I used to bite a bit of the chocolate off to expose the flavour then put all these bitten sweets in order of my favourite and thus munch through them. What a disgusting pastime but then I reckon nobody would have wanted one of my sweeties. Now I just eat them as I take them out the bag.
The orange cream is lovely and orangey firm in texture not soft, squidgy and sickly like so many soft centres. The coffee is the same firm texture, a delicious coffee flavour, not strong, nice and sweet but not sickly sweet. The raisin is a raisin in galaxy milk chocolate, delicious. My only disappointment is the honeycomb but I still like them, so no you cannot have one. I think they are supposed to taste like maltesers but to me they are a wee bit bland not as good as a malteser per se. One little tip, they are often bigger than the other revels so most of the time I guess them correctly.
Over the years revels have changed, they used to have a coconut one which was like the bounty coconut only a little firmer. I think that is why I like revels, it is the firmness of the centres I don't like soft centres in regular boxes of chocolates they are always too soft and sickly for me. Anyway the coconut centre was replaced by the coffee. I don't know why they only have the 6 centres because I would happily welcome coconut back into my bag of revels. Another flavour which was replaced was a peanut, again just a peanut in lovely galaxy chocolate which was replaced by the raisin. I suppose with so many people having nut allergies it was a good idea to replace this sweet when it cannot be identified so easily.
In 2008 Revels housed a Big Brother Eviction Advertising Campaign in which consumers voted which flavour they would like to have evicted from the bag and would be replaced by another. The evicted flavour was coffee which was replaced by strawberry. There was an incredible amount of people who voted this poor flavour out of the bag. Nonetheless this new flavour didn't stay for long, I don't ever remember tasting one, and in 2009 coffee was allowed to return.
Revels come in a variety of packet sizes. The standard bag is 35g and costs around 49p, not really worth the effort of opening it you just get used to these wonderful flavours and start to relax when wham bam thankyou mam they are all gone. The next size is 140g pouch about £1.73 ideal for sharing so my advice is eat them on your own, or just bite a bit of chocolate of each one to reveal the centre!! There is a 240g pouch which I promise I have not sat alone with but I really don't like sharing my revels so I probably won't buy one. These sell for around £2.75 but it looks as though Tesco are selling them on offer at present for £2. I am just going to pop to Tesco won't be a minute. Sometimes you can also buy a tub of revels but I am not sure of the weight-age or price. Can't find anything online and think I have only seen them at the cinema.
In all seriousness revels must be an occasional treat, which is why I only have them once a month. The sugar and fat content is rather high and not good for our cholesterol. Here is the bad news:
