Disadvantages: MAY NOT APPRECIATE THAT SUPRISE.
When visiting my local garage this morning to get some petrol, I noticed these packets of sweets on the counter. I hadn't noticed them around for a long time. But there they were staring at me from the shelf, bringing me out in beads of perspiration. Out of all the chocolate in the land why any one would want to choose a bag of revels is beyond me.
I remember being young and waiting with anticipation for my aunt to visit. She would always bring a bag of sweets for me and my sister and we would run around her ankles like two excited puppies. However one day this treat was to be marred forever, this was when she made the unforgivable choice of buying us revels.
I will never forget, the utter disgust I felt when biting into a coffee centred revel. Infact the other centres were only marginly more appealing. I hated the fact that you have no idea of the fate that awaits you until you bite into the milk chocolate covered sweet. Will your taste buds be tantalised by the pleasing enough orange creme or will you be pulling faces and hecking due to the awful coffee centre.
Now I fully understand that there are some strange people out there who think revels are the bees knees. Obviously there are millions as this brand of sweets would not have been on the market for so many years otherwise. But For me they are evil sweets. They lure you in and then just when you think you have a delicious treat it blasts your tatse buds with a overly sweet caramel or a horrendously bitter coffee flavour.
I think it is due to the fact that I am quite unadventurous with food. I don't mind giving things a try but I want to know what my taste buds are about to expect. I like to know that i am eating an orange sweet or a peanut sweet. Not wait until it is partially digested before I know what Im eating.
In 1998 there was a great marketing campaign regarding these sweets. They asked the public to vote big brother stylee for which flavour they would like to have evicted. A huge majority of the public voted to boot out coffee and replace it with a strawberry fondent. While this was followed for a while the revel manufacturers soon changed their minds and reinstated the coffee flavour.
Not all of the revels in the packet are awful, infact some are quite nice. You have orange, raisin, malteser, caramel, smooth milk chocolate and of course coffee. Each 35g bag will give you a good variety of these flavours. These revels are widely available and cost around 50p a bag.
Summary: iLL HAVE A FLAKE!!
