McVitie's Jaffa Cake Bars
Disadvantages: High fat and sugar content
These cake bars are of course based upon the ever popular Jaffa Cake. Aswell as this variety, you can also buy Jaffa Cake Mini Rolls however in this review I will be rating the Jaffa Cake Cake Bar. They are produced by McVities and are available at a number of stores. They sell in a multipack of 5 cakes which are currently retailing at Tesco for £1.35 however they are in a multibuy offer of 2 for £2.20 until 18th August.
Similar to the pictures above the cakes come in a cardboard tray covered with plastic coating. Each cake is individually wrapped making them perfect for packed lunches or those who are not regular cake eaters. The packaging is blue with orange writing which looks similar to orange peel. Each cake bar consists of light sponge, topped with a generous helping of orange filling similar to that in Jaffa Cakes and then covered in dark chocolate. Each bar is about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.
The taste of these bars are very good and I can assure you that you will find it difficult to eat just the one! The chocolate is thick and of good quality and complements the orange flavouring very well. Although I am not a big fan of dark chocolate, I really enjoy the coating on these bars. The orangy filling is slightly different to the original Jaffa Cakes as it is more sticky and less jelly like in texture. It tastes very orangy and when eaten with the chocolate it is the perfect match and melts well in the mouth. The sponge is very light and airy and is almost white in colour. You can see it is of good quality. All 3 ingredients of this cake bar work extremely well together in order to complement one another and produce a fantastic tasting cake bar.
Each cake bar contains 129 calories, 15.2g of sugar, 5.5g fat (2.8g which saturates) and less than 0.1g of salt. They are quite high in both fat and sugar considering how big they are so therefore I believe they should be eaten in moderation.
I would recommend these to anyone. Personally, I am not a big fan of either orange or dark chocolate but I find that these go down a treat. Kids love them and because they come in packs of 5 individually wrapped they are great for lunchboxes. They are good value for money (it works out at 27p per cake) and even better when on offer! I prefer these to the mini rolls because you get both more chocolate and more orange.
