Advantages: Light & low calorie!
Disadvantages: slightly small
I adore Jaffa cakes! But the problem I find is that once you open a packet, it's empty before you realise that your hands have been stuffing them in your mouth and how many calories you have consumed by doing so. Why do Mcvitie's products have to be so damn good? So because of my nonexistent will power when it comes to a packet of jaffa cakes I told myself I was no longer going to buy them... until I discovered Mcvitie's Jaffa cake BARS! Portion controlled, low in calories and super delicious! Whenever these are on offer they are now always in my trolley instead of their round big brother.
Jaffa cake bars are made by Mcvitie's which has been a confectionary company for around 160 years. They produce products including the famous penguin bars, the original jaffa cakes and hobnobs. Their newest creations include quirks and medley bars.
~ Price and Availability ~
Mcvitie's Jaffa cake bars are available in most major, well-stocked supermarkets such as Tesco's, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. The cake bars are available to buy in packs of five for around £1.30, however they are often on offer at £1.00 or any 2 for £2.00 - so it's worth looking around.
~ Packaging ~
Mcvitie's jaffa cake bars come in a dark blue plastic outer wrapper with the jaffa cake logo printed on the front in orange. The bars themselves sit in a black plastic tray inside this wrapper and then are wrapped again separately in the dark blue wrapper. Underneath the name of the product I am told this is the perfect blend of bittersweet, dark, crackly chocolate, light sponge and zingy orange centre. The front of the packaging also tells me that there are only 94 calories per bar! On the back of the packaging you can find the ingredients list, nutritional information, contact information and allergy advice.
~ Taste ~
These are so light! Biting into one of these you are hit with so many different wonderful tastes and textures. You have the crisp, creamy outer chocolate layer, which is quite thin but substantial enough. Then you have the tangy orange 'jaffa' filling which is quite a generous layer and tastes very fruity! Then, finally your teeth sink into the lightest, fluffiest, spongiest sponge ever! There is a generous amount of it too! Admittedly they are different from the original jaffa cake as they are softer and springier - which I like. These Jaffa cake bars are also extremely moist; the sponge is not a bit dry or bland. The flavour combinations work so well together and leave you wanting more! Which may be a good thing for some and may not be for others :D Chocolate and orange are just a match made in heaven and with added sponginess it just makes them so...MMMMMMM!
~ Other information ~
There are 94 calories per bar, which is excellent considering a normal chocolate bar is usually around the 200 mark and I can't imagine what a whole packet of Jaffa cakes contains! EEEK. So these appeal to me much more.
Mcvitie's jaffa cake bars contain milk, eggs, soya and gluten.
They contain no hydrogenated vegetable oil.
There is no mention of them being vegetarian friendly so much away at your own risk!
~ Overall opinion ~
Mcvitie's jaffa cake bars taste so sinful (but there not)! Where else do you get chocolate, sponge and jaffa filling in a bar for 94 calories? These are just full of total yummy-ness! The only downfall to these for some people may be that they are pretty small; I think there a decent enough size but I know some people will want to reach for another one as they are so light and slightly smaller than your average chocolate bar, but if you did reach for another you would still have had under 200 calories! I would recommend these to anybody who enjoys a good jaffa cake, I'm sure kids will love these as much as adults! I would definitely recommend these to any calorie conscious or dieting people out there are they are portion controlled, they satisfy that niggling chocolate craving and aren't as bad for you as a whole packet of jaffa cakes!
Summary: Can't get enough of these Jaff-tasticly moorish bars!
