Milky Bar Moments
Advantages: Yummy, great format
Disadvantages: No small packs available
Many years ago, probably some time in the early nineties, I was an avid consumer of a chocolate treat resembling Minstrels. Only difference was, they were a mixture of milk and white chocolate "coins". I can't remember for the life of me what they were called (nor can the OH, though we've decided Mongrels would work), and to be honest, I'd kind of forgotten about them til last night. But anyone who can remember them will probably agree they were brilliant, especially the white ones....
Milkybar Moments are just like these! Available in 175g re-sealable pouches from Tescos at the moment for a diet-smashing 84p - usually £1.75. I love all things white chocolate (although Milkybar is the Daddy), and all things minstrel, and the combination of crunchy shell and oozing creamy milkybar was too much to resist at such a good price.
The packaging is great - I love the resealable pouch format. Its shaped so it sits up on the worksurface, and when you have torn across the top you can easily get your whole hand in to access the goodies. This means less fumbling, less touching all the chocs just to get a couple, and therefore less "sweaty" sweets! I also understand from more self-controlled types that the sticky strip provided on the exterior of the pack means you can make the bag airtight should you wish to save some for later.
Milkybar make a big old deal about how natural their sweets are...which I find a little much. The ingredients list is called the Milkybar recipe, and each dodgy-sounding ingredient is explained in brackets. But vegetable fat from "tropical plants" is still just as bad for you as chip oil, so although cute, I don't find it all that convincing.
Each 100g contains 500 kcal and 22.1g fat - which is entirely normal for a chocolate product - its down to you how many you eat! Nestle remind you to eat them as part of a "varied, balanced diet". I would comment that I have never seen this product available in a smaller pack - considering Milkybar is a brand primarily for kids, I think that's a bit naughty.
Onto the actual eating, then! The Milkybar moment is the perfect size for one-at-a-time eating. You are not tempted to shove a few in your mouth, as they're chunky enough to satisfy singly. They are a similar circumference to Minstrels, a little fatter and more rounded - I'm sure you probably could get 15 or so in your mouth if you tried, but I haven't. The shell is sugary and crunchy, as per the Minstrel comparative, however the fact that the edges of the disc are less tapered means thay feel harder if you bite into them. Inside is delicious creamy Milkybar chocolate - mmmmm! If you like white chocolate, you will most probably love these, and somehow the bite-size format and combination of crunchy and smooth textures makes them a bit less sickly than the bar version. In all, I cannot fault the vanilla-choc flavour or thick, velvety mouthfeel of these yummy treats!
Just as an aside, I once read in an article about psychology that you can tell people's key drivers by looking at which chocolate they like to eat. Apparently those who choose Minstrels and other "coin-like" sweets (such as these) are primarily motivated in life by money. Those who choose king-size choccy-bars with chunky girth are motivated by something else!!! Always worth bearing in mind if your boss offers to pop to the vending machine!
I really enjoyed these, especially at the bargain price I got them for. I would definitley buy them again if I saw a deal, and if smaller bags were produced, I'd probably be happy to pay full-price for one of those!
