Advantages: Organic Fair trade chocolate

Disadvantages: Chilli causes tingling sensation

Whilst looking at the Fair Trade stall at church my husband spotted a bar of chocolate he thought sounded different. Chilli and lime - a strange combination you may think, I know I did! I have heard of putting Chocolate into Chilli but not Chilli into chocolate and will Lime thrown in for good measure.

*The box*
The chocolate comes in a box, 16 x 8cm in size, the front is black with a shiny sort of watermark pattern and a lime green star and writing. It is made by Montezuma's and is Organic. The back of the box is mostly red in colour with a mixture of rather small black and white writing. Our bar was best before January 2012, so has a fairly long shelf life. Made in the UK it is a 100granm size bar. The bar is sealed in thin silver foil with black stars with an "M" on them. It says on the front "Creative chocolate from Britain made with Imagination and Love".

*The Contents*
The chocolate is milk and quite pale in colour. I thought at first that there were going to be 24 pieces, but the lower part of the bar is not marked but is flat with a star shape on it. Breaking isn't quite as simple to give people the same size pieces as at the top of the bar!

*The Taste and Smell*
I was surprised that I couldn't smell the chocolate at all as the Lime dominated. It also was the only flavour as I ate it, quite a sweet flavour, not unpleasant but not what I had expected. No sign of Chilli flavour at all which was rather disappointing. Help! As I swallowed the chocolate I felt a tingling/burning sensation down my throat and hurriedly had some coffee which fortunately was cool enough to drink! This was quite a surprise that I wasn't ready for, but it didn't put me off and I tried a second piece which had the same effect, Lime flavour and tingling/burning sensation.
A strange combination but I enjoyed it in a slightly sadistic way! Painful pleasure! It wasn't just me though as my husband when questioned described similar feelings.

*History*
Montezuma's was founded in 2000 and they believe in trading fairly, not only with the way they purchase cocoa but with their packaging. More information is on their website - www.montezumas.co.uk
The chocolate was made as a limited edition bar for a Chilli festival and they have been persuaded to make a permanent product.

*Ingredients*
The largest ingredient is organic sugar, then organic cocoa solids of 34%, organic milk powder 22.5%, less than 1% ground chilli, vanilla and lime oil. It is gluten free and suitable for Vegetarians.

*Cost*
It cost my husband £2.25 from the Fair trade stall and is also available online. Postage costs £4.95 from the Montezuma's website and the chocolate is £2.39, so we got a bargain! It's worth looking in Fair trade shops for a good deal.

*Verdict?*
Would I buy it again? I probably won't go out of the way to buy it but if my husband buys another bar I'll certainly help him eat it!
