Advantages: Tastes great. Is Filling.
Disadvantages: Is perhaps not widely stocked.
Many years ago when I was in high school my friends and I used to think it was cool to eat our lunches out of the vending machine. One of the things I would always buy was a bar of Nestle Crunch, a milk chocolate and puffed rice bar. I used to choose it primarily for the taste of it but also because I used to kid myself that the cereal ingredient made it a slightly healthier option than a Mars bar! I honestly thought Nestle had stopped selling these Crunch bars but on a recent trip to my local 'everything's a pound' shop I found them in the confectionary aisle, felt very nostalgic and bought a few bars because they were on a special offer.
I used to buy single snack sized bars of this but I'm reviewing the 100g sharing bar which cost me 99p. They come in a paper wrapper which is packed with foil underneath. The wrapper is blue and the front of the packet shows the product name alongside a picture of how the product looks. On the back of the wrapper there is a lot of helpful information about the product although it's printed in several languages and it can be difficult to locate the English version of all the details. Nevertheless, full ingredients are listed and there is a nutritional information chart. There is also contact details for the UK branch of Nestle.
The ingredients state this bar is comprised of 30% cocoa solids with a minimum of 18% milk solids as well as 15% crisped cereals which is made up of rice flour, maize flour, wheat gluten, sugar, cocoa powder, salt and skimmed milk powder. Each 100g bar provides 513 calories whilst a 25g portion provides 128 calories and 6.5g of fat.
The bar measures around 16 centimetres long and 7 centimetres wide and is 1 centimetre deep. I recommend taking the whole bar out of it's wrapper to have a look at as the design of the bar is quite unusual and quirky. The whole chocolate bar spells out the word 'CRUNCH' and around the letters the chocolate is cut into crazy shaped segments. It means that when you snap a piece of chocolate off you don't get a conventional sized piece. The pieces with letters on are the biggest then you have random shaped bits that are indented with a zigzag edging which are about half the size. If you wanted to go along the bar in strips as you might do with something like a Cadbury's Dairy Milk then you'd get two random shaped pieces and a letter. It's also possible to snap off smaller bits should you not want as much (that is rarely the case for me!!).
The chocolate bar is very much like the rice crispies cakes we all make as youngsters. There is a layer of chocolate mixed with crispy, crunchy rice pieces on the bottom of the bar and a thin chocolate layer on the top of this which is the same milk chocolate. The composition of the bar is such that you can't tell that much that there is extra chocolate on the top although I have definitely noticed more chocolate up top. This may be simply due to the cereal pieces sinking to the bottom of the bar or they might melt extra chocolate on top when they shape the pattern into the bar. Either way it tastes great. The chocolate is really creamy and sweet and it melts in the mouth around the crunchy cereal pieces which make the texture really interesting. The cereal pieces are crispy and feel laden with a cocoa rich flavour. They don't go soggy as soon as they enter your mouth. Overall the chocolate and cereal blend feels quite dense and rich. It feels like a filling chocolate bar.
I'm really glad that Nestle still make these bars as they are really flavoursome and satisfying. I will definitely buy them again if I can find them locally and would recommend these to anyone who has a sweet tooth!
You can find out more about the brand and the products on their website. Apparently they also have a white chocolate variety!
