Advantages: great bitter/sweet taste combination going on

Disadvantages: calories and fat content.

I noticed these online when Kit Kat had a campaign to choose a Chunky Champion and consumers could choose one of 4 varieties to go from a limited addition to a full time product. I never tried any of the varieties at the time as I tend not to look at the chocolate bars in shops or I get a bit of a taste for it and want to keep eating it. However, when I took the kids in the local shop for a little treat I really noticed this product on the shelf, and it really appealed to me.

Kit Kat Chunky bars have been eaten by me on many occasions, particularly when I was pregnant. I love the thick chocolate wrapped around the wafer, and it has a real crunch factor biting through the layers. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. Would the peanut butter be quite chunky in itself or smooth?

Before I go on, I am not a massive fan of peanut butter. I find the taste on bread a bit weird. I can manage a small amount of it but couldn't eat a full sandwich of it as I find the tang a bit much. However, when I have eaten peanut butter flavoured chocolate bars before such as the ones you can buy when you visit America or from shops that specialise in imported products, something about the slight bitter tang against the sweetness of the milk chocolate really appeals to my taste buds, and I have no problem eating it in this format.

The peanut butter Kit Kat Chunky uses the same high quality chocolate Nestlé use in all their chocolate products. The layer of peanut butter is on top of the wafer and just underneath a decent thickness of chocolate. The peanut butter is really smooth, and thick enough to get some tanginess but not so thick it overpowers the sweetness of the chocolate. Overall, eating this was a very pleasant taste sensation, and now I have tried it I want to try it again very soon. Oh dear.

The price of the bar in my corner shop was 60p for a 48g bar. This is in line with costs of chocolate bars these days, and is enough to put you off indulging too frequently when you think how much it costs for a snack. A bar contains 260 kilocalories, of which 9% of calories are from protein thanks to the peanuts, and 22% is fat. So overall, not the healthiest of snacks, but as an occasional treat, I will let myself indulge in them. I think I would actually buy this in preference to a snickers bar or a normal kit kat chunky, as I really enjoyed what felt like an exciting and quite novel eating experience.

Summary: A bit of an indulgent treat, which for me felt quite American compared to other UK chocolates.
