Advantages: Price, Ok taste
Disadvantages: Artificial
I have quite a sweet tooth and I love anything chocolaty. I was shopping at my local Costcutter store the other day when I came across these chilled deserts. I had tried the Milky Bar ones before but not the Rolo one. As there was a 'Buy One, Get TWO Free' offer on, I decided I had to get the Rolo (and the Milky Bar one and the Yorkie one). So all in all I paid around £1.20 for 6 deserts (3 packs of 2) which I think is excellent value for money.
If I was looking at the chocolate section in a shop, I would always go for something chunky like a Cunchie or Mars Bar or Maltesers or Minstrels - I would never think of going for Rolos and just think 'Urgh Rolos'. However, if someone offered me a Rolo, I would have to have one and I love the taste yet I never buy my own which is quite weird.
These deserts come in packs of two. Each little pot is 70g.
When you peel back the lid, you are greeted with a smooth chocolate kind of mousse. There is no toffee in sight - it is hiding under the bottom, so be sure to give it a good stir to mix the flavours.
The desert is well set - it is very wobbly and thick and wobbles when you touch it. The toffee is thicker than the chocolate. The desert has a lovely smooth texture which just melts in your mouth.
This desert is quite sweet and I think that for some people it would be too much as it is quite sickly sweet. It is also quite rich.
Whilst I like this desert, I do think that it has quite an artificial taste. It also has a slight 'powder-y' texture to it, which makes me think that the desert has come from powder.
The pots are quite small - it's so easy to eat on in a couple of spoonfuls. I can see why people eat the two. I like to eat mine with a teaspoon so that it lasts longer.
To me, whilst it does have a slight chocolate and toffee taste like Rolos, I do not think that this desert tastes like Rolos at all.
I think they should have added mini Rolos - kind of like what Ben and Jerry's do with their Caramel Chew Chew Ice Cream ( they add mini chocolates which are filled with caramel).
As for nutrients - this is very high in fat with 8.3g (5.6g of which is saturated) per pot. There is 170 calories per pot - quite a lot really considering how small the desert is. This shocked me; a pot will provide 20% of your recommended daily allowance of sugar (17.8g per pot). There is also 0.3g of salt per pot. So all in all, these aren't the best things to eat when you are on a diet.
I do think that these deserts come across as being quite luxurious, whilst at an affordable price.
I would recommend them, but only as an occasional treat.
Thanks for reading!
