Nestle Rowntree's Rolo
Nestle Rowntree's Rolos are a packet of ten sweets that come wrapped up in a tube. They are a well-known sweet and the distinctive brown wrappers with 'Rolo' emblazoned on them in red and gold make them easy to recognise.Rolos are a small bucket shaped piece of caramel toffee, or perhaps upside down bucket would describe them better, and they are covered in scrumptious milk chocolate. The chocolate feels surprisingly thick when you bite into it as it doesn't look that thick on first viewing. The toffee is delightful and not too sweet as a lot of caramel filmed chocolates sometimes are. There is an 'O' engraved into the top of each one and I always wondered why this wasn't an 'R'. Maybe the 'R' would be more complicated to pull off or maybe it isn't an 'O' and just a circle for show.
Everyone remembers the advertisements for Rowntree's Rolos. The emphasis was always based on who you would save your last Rolo for. It was quite a clever ploy if you really think about it and it is still remembered by most people today, albeit thirty years since it first hit our television screens. It is best remembered for the famous phrase "Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?''.The most famous ones were the artist sketching the little girl and boy and the boy bashfully saving his last one for the girl and the opposite in a follow-up advert. Later adverts would depict different people saving their last Rolo for their loved one or best friend or the selfish keeping it all to themselves. The Rolo became a symbol as well as a favourite sweet and was popular among romantics and used as a status symbol amongst friends. The people who made the advert were not stupid and knew exactly what they were doing and the sales prove it. A different stance was taken over the last decade as the old adverts are now seen as too soft and Rolo has been revamped as more of a cool sweet than a way to get to someone's heart.
Even though the slogan has been dropped, a lot of people still see it as a romantic gesture to leave the last one to their partner and this proves just what a great idea the ad campaign was back in the day. There is even a website called Mylastrolo.com where you can pick up any number of last Rolo related gifts for Valentine's Day or just of you feel in the mood. You can get little last Rolos to pop on bracelets or necklaces, specially designed packs of Rolos where the last one is wrapped specially in silver, gold or diamond foil and a multitude of other gifts. You can even go as far as purchasing a silver, gold or diamond Rolo that comes in its own pretty little box with a bow. You may be surprised to learn that they are specially made of real silver, gold and diamond and start at....drum roll.... sixty nine pounds. I don't have a drum roll or anything else for that matter that will get you ready for the next gasp, when I tell you that a small diamond Rolo necklace on the site goes for seven thousand, eight hundred pounds! There is also a small platinum diamond Rolo for four thousand, eight hundred pounds.
The website seems to be a traditionalist as well it seems, as they are bringing back all the old TV campaigns so you can watch them over and over again.
I really like Rolos, especially of the fridge because you get that lovely crackle from the hardened chocolate and then the extra chewiness from the hardened toffee inside; yummy. They are nice to eat normally but I prefer them from the fridge as it gives them added chewiness.
I always used to like opening the pack when I was younger and the gold foil always gave them that 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' feel. I must admit that when I was younger I couldn't care less if I loved anyone enough to give them my last one and would've balked at the fact; although saying that I was always a generous kid and shared nicely with friends. Today I am a soppy bugger and just recently saved the last one for my partner; well most of the pack actually.
Earlier on in this review I mentioned the adverts, so I can't leave it without mentioning some of my favourite ones over the years. Everyone remembers the 'Elephants never forgets' advert and the most annoying kid ever and it is still funny today, but my favourite has to be the 'Skippy the Kangaroo' one. Skippy is sat in front of two buys and the one boy holds up his last Rolo to exclaim 'I have saved my last Rolo for the best friend a boy could ever have'. Skippy shuffles with pride and expectation as the boy says 'Here you go Mark' and hands it to the other boy. The next scene we see Skippy with a police officer and Skippy relays a message in his usual teeth sucking manner. The police officer says 'what's that Skip? Someone has thrown the two boys in the billabong? Who could've done that?' Skippy even murmurs 'ahem'. Priceless.
Rolos were first manufactured in nineteen thirty-seven by Mackintosh who later became Rowntree Mackintosh and are now owned by the Nestle Group. They have been around for a long time now and they come in many varieties and different forms. You can get Rolo cookies, yogurts, puddings, cakes, muffins, cake bars, biscuits, birthday cakes, Milkshakes, ice cream, ice cream bars and different size Rolos such as mini versions and a larger version. They are all made with the same ingredients, caramel and chocolate. MacDonalds also did a Rolo flavoured McFlurry. There are also a variety of Easter eggs and products made for Easter and a selection of special Christmas variants.
Rolo's are one of my favourite sweets and always have been and probably always will be.
Five out of five stars for me.
