I'd been vegan for 6 years when I first discovered this dairy-free alternative to white chocolate. I was given a bar as a gift and as soon as I'd a little nibble of it I exclaimed - 'the milky bars are on me!' Nothing had reminded me of eating (and enjoying) milky bars as a child since, well, my childhood!
I think these bars are fantastic, a tad on the pricey side but well worth it for a real treat. The ingredients are all natural too, so no sneaky chemicals are in the bar, and it whips into a great cake or cookie topping. Just melt it on the hob for a few minutes, and then leave it to harden once you've spread it onto your item of choice. It also works well as a carrot cake topping- I have made sugar-free carrot cake before and found that the Organica white chocolate topping has sufficed to sweeten it up enough.
Full marks, Organica!
Unfortunately, when you're supposed to be dairy-free (I say "supposed" because I just can't help myself sometimes!) or if you're a vegan, there isn't much choice in chocolate. Having tried a number of dairy-free chocolate alternatives, I can tell you that there's isn't many that taste nice and they certainly don't do it for me when wanting a chocolate-fix (you know, that delicious taste of dairy milk chocolate!).
In regards to white chocolate, I have only found one bar of chocolate that is anywhere near up to the standards of normal white chocolate and this is the Dairy Free Vegan Organic & Fair Trade White Bar. It's not cheap at roughly £2.30 for a 100g bar, but what choice do you have?
This bar is the closest I've tasted to a normal white chocolate bar. It's actually a vanilla chocolate bar containing Fairtrade organic cocoa butter, fair trade organic raw cane sugar, organic rice syrup (10%), organic vegetable oils (sunflower oil), organic vanilla and sea salt. Yes, sea salt! I find sea salt often appears in the ingredients list of dairy-free products.
As well as being dairy-free, this bar is also organic and contains Fairtrade ingredients. It's also gluten-free, soya-free, wheat-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans, so I'd say it's pretty much a guilt-free pleasure! OK, so it's got sugar and sea salt in it, but otherwise it's all good!
As I said before, it actually tastes quite similar to a normal chocolate bar, not quite the same, but not far off. Put it this way, it tastes nice and I often struggle to say that about some dairy-free products!
The Dairy Free Vegan Organic & Fair Trade White Bar can be found in health food shops and online chocolate shops such as alotofchocolate.co.uk
If you can't have proper white chocolate, then this is the chocolate bar for you!
