Overall a good energy bar from Powerbar.

This is another bar that I have bought to help with my training over the next few weeks in the run up to a couple of races. This bar is made by Powerbar and is part of there Performance Energy Bar range. It cost me about £1.20 for one Vanilla Flavoured bar.

The bar comes in a brightly coloured plastic wrapper which is gold and blue. The front has a large Powerbar logo with "Performance" underneath. There are then various sentences to make the product appeal to the consumer such as "For Maximum Energy Delivery". The rear is covered in very small writing that lists all the product and nutritional information in a variety of languages. The bar is 14cm x 5cm x 0.5cm in size, which is the normal for all the Powerbar energy bars.

I bought this vanilla flavour as I have had it before and it has a good plain flavour that is not too sickly or overpowering. On opening the bar there is a light smell of sweetness and of vanilla. This is quite nice as it is nice compared to other bars. It is clear that the manufacturers have spent more time on what is in the bar than what it looks like as it is a very plain beige/light brown colour. It does not have any coatings like other bars, it is simply a bar formed just of the basic ingredients.

This means that the bar is slightly sticky to touch and to bite. It has a slight bite to it which is nice. The bar then requires quite a bit of chewing before swallowing which I personally don't like as I would prefer something that can be swallowed quickly. It does not taste very much like vanilla which in some ways is a shame as I quite like the taste. However as the taste is quite plain, it makes it quite easy to eat without being sickly.

The bar reminds of how a soggy biscuit looks, but it is a lot firmer. I have found that on hot days the bar starts to go softer, which means that it gets even more sticky. This can become a problem as I like to eat one over a period of time and so it can make a mess of my pockets. The only way I get round this is to open the wrapper carefully before I leave so that I am able to wrap it back up during a ride.

The sole purpose of this bar is to provide you with a source of energy during a long training session. The wrapper claims that it contains a special "C2Max" mixture that contains a special ratio of glucose and fructose which is meant to be the best. I find that this bar does seem to provide me with more energy to train longer and a harder, but whether this bar works better than others I have tried is debatable. I would personally find it hard to tell if one bar works better than another.

If you like the texture and flavours that these Powerbar Bars come in then it would be worth buying again as it is always good to stick with what suits you best, however I personally perfer a bar with a bit of crunch and a nice flavour and so I probably won't be buying these again.

Overall I am going to give this bar 3/5 as it is quite sticky once opened which can be a problem in warm weather and per 60g bar there are 21g of sugar! These can be bought from any good sports shop or online from many retailers.

      Thanks for reading.
