I've really taken to the Sainsburys Basics range, and thought that I would expand my shopping from just the trusted essentials to a few treats as well, so I decided to grab myself a bar of their basics milk chocolate and see if it was any good .

At 27p for a 100g bar, it's certainly cheap - miles cheaper than buying the same amount of chocolate would be in my corner shop . The packaging wasn't too inspiring though, being the standard bland orange and white colour that the Basics range is known for . Not interesting, but at least recognisable, and it did contain all the relevant nutrition and ingredient information .

The nutritional info, rather than the standard per 100g, is given for a quarter of a bar . That doesn't make sense . I know I'm always moaning about products not giving the nutritional info per portion, but when the bar IS 100g, I see no reason for the nutritional info not to represent that . Sure, give it for the 25g quarter bar portion too, but leave the 100g bit on there for us greedy, lazy folk who like to eat the whole bar and not have to do the four times table . I know, just sheer laziness on my part - mini moan over!

Per quarter bar, just in case you were wondering after my moaning, there are 126 calories, and 6.5 g of fat (4.1 sasturated). Ok, now you put it like that, maybe I'll try and not eat the whole thing! There is also 15.3 g of sugar per quarter bar .... an awful lot, but I suppose it is chocolate!

Okay, onto the taste ! Well , it has a satisfying crunch when you bite into it . It's very smooth in texture, and is very creamy . It's also very sweet - a little too sweet in fact, and it leaves a slightly greasy after taste in the mouth . Having tasted it, I'm definitely going to stick to a quarter of the bar .

With that said, I don't think I can be too harsh on it for not being the best quality chocolate. It's dirt cheap, and you can't expect miracles at 27p! While not the best quality chocolate, I can see a chunk going down nicely on those days when I just NEED something chocolatey and I need it now . I can also see this working out quite nicely in cakes as opposed to those awful Scot-block things, and it's a cheap enough bar to keep one in to keep the sprog quiet when she's really getting on my nerves.

Not the best chocolate, but it did take the edge of my chocolate craving, and is just the right price to be used in child bribery. Because no chance in hell she's getting her mitts on my Dairy Milk!

3 stars - not great, but not bad either!
